Identity Thief Busted<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As commonplace as identity fraud has become in South Africa, it\u2019s rare to catch the perpetrators in the act. Operating in Johannesburg, a syndicate that has hijacked the identities of several victims country-wide and caused havoc for the companies they tried to defraud, gets the special Carte Blanche treatment as we track down the culprits and join the police in catching the ring-leader red-handed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waiting to Exhale \u2013 the Historic Silicosis Settlement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since July news of the largest ever class-action settlement in the history of the gold-mining industry has begun permeating the furthest corners of South Africa, where thousands of former mine workers have waited for decades to hear how much their suffering is worth. Around 500,000 breadwinners and their families, hard-hit by silicosis and tuberculosis from working on the mines, were awarded R5 billion collectively in a lawsuit against six of the gold mining giants who operated around 35 of the largest mines. Meeting some of the families who have been waiting, Carte Blanche asks whether the victory can change lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diesel Skimming<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you heard of diesel skimming? It\u2019s a little-known, illegal operation where hundreds of truck drivers make unscheduled pit stops to allow criminals to siphon off several litres of fuel from their trucks in exchange for hard cash. The transaction is quick. The money is easy. And it\u2019s unsuspecting consumers who could be forking out extra in transport fees. Carte Blanche goes undercover to expose one major syndicate on Johannesburg\u2019s East Rand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chernobyl\u2019s Babushkas<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is contaminated, with radiation levels fluctuating from one area to another. A few minutes of unprotected exposure to areas near the core of the infamous Reactor Four that exploded at Chernobyl in 1986 would cause near-instant death. Less toxic but still hazardous, some places around the power plant remain radiation hot-spots even 30 years after the disaster. While experts warn against spending too much time there \u2013 almost 200 people, mainly women, still call this home. In a South African television first, Carte Blanche heads into the site of the world\u2019s worst nuclear disaster, and meets one of its grittiest survivors, right on her doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
