Romantic comedy \u2018Fanie Fourie\u2019s Lobola\u2019, which opens in cinemas on 1 March, has won the all-important Audience Choice Award at the second annual Jozi Film Festival held at the weekend. The awards ceremony was held on Sunday night at Villa Arcadia in Parktown, at an event hosted by John Vlismas.<\/p>\n

\"Lobola\"<\/a><\/p>\n

A total of 23 films were screened at three venues across Johannesburg \u2013 The Bioscope Independent Cinema in Fox Street, Villa Arcadia and Kliptown. \u2018Fanie Fourie\u2019s Lobola\u2019, a funny and contemporary story about love and tradition, kicked off the festival at The Bioscope on Friday, 15 February and was sold out. The film tells the tale of what happens when an Afrikaans guy and a Zulu girl fall in love and have to navigate their way through the complicated process of lobola.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe film was very well received by the audiences,\u201d says Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution. \u201cCinemagoers were enthusiastic about both the comedy and the candour of the story. Winning the audience award at the Jozi Film Festival bodes well for the performance of the film when it is released in March and we are delighted that the film received such a special accolade. It\u2019s an acknowledgment of how clever and contemporary the story is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Directed by Henk Pretorius (\u2018Bakgat!\u2019, \u2018Bakgat! 2\u2019), and co-written by Pretorius and Janine Eser, \u2018Fanie Fourie\u2019s Lobola\u2019 stars talented newcomer Zethu Dlomo as Dinky and film and comedy favourite, Eduan van Jaarsveld as the affable Fanie. The film is the first from Once Upon a Story, a script development initiative headed by veteran industry leader Paul Raleigh and Janine Eser, which aims to take great South African stories to the big screen and the world.<\/p>\n
