Coming Up On Carte Blanche – 8 January 2023

WORLD WIDE WEBB

“Who among us doesn’t have a frightening road rage story to tell? I know I do. Driving in our country is one of life’s more frustrating – and dangerous – experiences. Keeping a cool head while all around you, chaos and a frightening lack of courtesy are unleashed is challenging. But while a horn honked in anger is for most of us the limit of our response, others are overwhelmed by a need for misplaced retribution. And that, sadly, is why we have a road rage crisis.” – John Webb, Executive Producer

Keyless Conundrum

In a crime so perfectly executed, it’s almost impossible to spot. Thieves are making off with high-end cars and bakkies while their owners blissfully go about their business. Keyless entry cars are hot targets for criminal networks that have evolved globally. In South Africa, car thieves are swapping guns and violence for smart technology that enables them to steal cars without breaking a sweat, or physically confronting owners. And local crime networks are making up for lost time. Carte Blanche exposes the ease of high-tech car thefts that has manufacturers heading back to the drawing board to reverse engineer solutions.

Red Mist of Road Rage

It is that uncontrollable urge to ram your car into another driver’s… The desire to retaliate against big or small offences from other drivers on the road. But not reining in the red mist of anger in traffic can set off a spiral that can be life-threatening. What are the warning signs that could save a life? Carte Blanche examines the rise in road rage and meets people for whom it did not end well.

Flying Emergency Heroes

Not having access to medical evacuation in an emergency – like a car crash on a remote highway – can be life-threatening. Enter Helicopter Emergency Medical Services, or HEMS. This high-adrenaline, high-stakes occupation attracts everyday heroes who wait shift after shift for the opportunity to make a difference and potentially save a life. Carte Blanche joins the crew for a day in the life of the highly qualified men and women responding to emergency calls around the country, 24/7.

amaGlug-Glug

The popular Sasol amaGlug-Glug commercials from the early 90s created fond memories of the brown-eyed boy with the car that came to life, the cute boy in the Formula One pram, and the famous “windy-windy” taxi driver. The iconic ads expanded our urban dictionary and are still voted among the most loved in South Africa. Carte Blanche tracks down the characters and creatives that shaped careers.

PICKS OF THE WEEK

Missing Guns

Guns go missing in the South African Police Service all the time – a reported 7 331 firearms and 10 million rounds of ammunition stolen or lost over a decade. Despite millions spent on creating a secure digital system, a major loophole in the still-manual administration process means guns disappear without detection. And until the loophole is closed, the risk persists. We investigate the dangers of a police system in which hundreds of weapons go missing, and expose the loophole that has the country staring down the barrel of dangerous incompetence.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

One Car, Multiple Owners

It was meant to be a sweet deal: sell your vehicle at the best price to the dealer and use the money as a deposit for your next car. But some angry consumers say they’ve been duped by a family dealership in Gauteng. In this undercover investigation, Carte Blanche untangles an intricate scam where the same vehicle is sold to multiple buyers – leaving the clients out of pocket and out of the driver’s seat.
