Ster-Kinekor Announces Exclusive Screenings Of Khuli Chana Doccie, Picking Up The Pieces

The extraordinary ‘David and Goliath’ tale of rapper Khuli Chana, the SAPS and the case of the mistaken identity shooting that made headlines and occupied his life during 2013, is played out on the big screen. The exclusive distribution rights to the tell-all documentary, Picking up the Pieces: The Khuli Chana Story, have been secured by Seed Entertainment, and Ster-Kinekor will release the documentary for four screenings only, from 01 – 04 September, at select cinemas.

The documentary, directed by Monde Sibisi and produced by Asansa Maku, will be screened at the following Ster-Kinekor cinemas, for one show daily from 01 – 04 September: from 17:00 only at Maponya Mall in Soweto, Southgate in Johannesburg, Mall of Africa in Midrand, Sterland in Pretoria, Rustenburg, Mimosa Mall in Bloemfontein, and Gateway in Durban; at 19:30 at TygerValley in Cape Town and at 20:15 at Sandton in Johannesburg.

The Picking up the Pieces: The Khuli Chana Story documentary covers the massive year that was 2013 for Khuli Chana (real name Khulane Morule). From winning big at the SAMAs and other awards shows that year to having his music dominate on radio and being recognised as one of SA’s most loved personalities, Khuli Chana was involved in a mistaken identity shooting on the M1 highway. He had to “pick up the pieces” of his life after that shooting.

Audiences will witness Khuli Chana speaking candidly about the shooting incident and how it changed his life forever, for the first time in two years. The documentary also features interviews from other key people who were a part of his journey. They share their side of the story and provide personal insights into some of the things that went on behind the scenes with Khuli Chana of which the public are not aware.

Interviews were done with the likes of journalist Karyn Maughan, who covered the wrongful shooting incident extensively in the media; Daniel Witz, who was the lead attorney on the criminal case; Refiloe Ramogase, who was managing Khuli Chana at the time; and Raiko, Khuli Chana’s DJ, who was the first on the scene following the shooting, amongst others.

On why he decided to make the documentary, Khuli Chana has commented that, over the past two and a half years, this shooting incident has been the narrative of the media and the SAPS.

“Over the past year, I found myself wanting to speak my truth and the more I spoke about it, the more therapeutic it became. I decided to film the documentary for the people who have had such situations happen to them but had no voice to shed light on it.

“When something like this happens to you, you never get over it, but speaking about it helps with the healing process. The documentary was shot in March this year. Coincidentally, the final ruling of the case came through this month, which brings this journey full circle to a close with the release of Picking up the Pieces,” comments Khuli Chana.

Bookings are now open for the documentary, Picking up the Pieces: The Khuli Chana Story. It carries a PG/L classification and the running time is 1 hr 20 mins.
