The most trafficked animal in the world is the pangolin. Close on its heels are thresher sharks, a freshwater ray endemic to the Amazon Basin and many other species whose survival is threatened. With syndicates plying their lucrative trade in cyber space, cracking down on the scourge has become increasingly complex. Now, the world’s best minds have gathered in Johannesburg to thrash out trafficking and other crises affecting the planet’s species. Carte Blanche reports on the 17th global CITES conference.
