Saving the Elephant
To trade or to ban trading? The CITES COP17 conference ended this week, with several key decisions made to curb the illegal trade in endangered species. But despite vehement debate, rules banning the sale of ivory remain unchanged and for Africa’s rapidly dwindling elephant numbers, the next three years could be a tipping point as elephant poaching continues unabated. Carte Blanche asks: has the ban on ivory sales proven a complete failure or is it still key to the future survival of the species?

Hacking a Hacker
Is your business safe from a malicious online attack? Working on the premise of ‘it takes a thief to catch a thief’ a snowballing domain of hackers—of the ethical kind—are increasingly being paid to systematically infiltrate networks and expose vulnerabilities before they become a real problem. These so-called white-hats show Carte Blanche just how naive consumers and businesses could be prone to cyber attack and what you should know to stay safe.

Free State’s Haemorrhaging Healthcare
Last week Carte Blanche exposed a controversial stem cell unit at Pelonomi hospital. Despite having operated since June, last week the Medicines Control Council ordered the doctor running the unit to stop all treatments. Then the Department of Health in the province cancelled the controversial unit’s contract calling it a ’bad decision’ on their part. Over the past three years, Carte Blanche has uncovered widespread maladministration in the Free State’s public health sector. Little has changed…from a serious shortage of doctors, specialists and nurses to cases of medical negligence and the credibility of the University of the Free State Medical School hanging in the balance. Is the Free State’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse?

Race Against the Sun
Imagine travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town and never stopping to fill the tank. Local and international participants in this year’s Sasol Solar Challenge have just spent eight days in cars that, powered only by the sun, travel as far as they can go on roads between Pretoria and Cape Town—the winners reaching over 4000 kilometres. Vying in vehicles far more innovative than in previous years, Carte Blanche meets contenders in a race to promote the power of alternative energy.
