Special Treat For TV Connoisseurs : M-Net Edge To Feature Fab Foreign Language Series

M-Net Edge – the home of highly acclaimed, award-winning and cutting-edge television series – will showcase first-class foreign language series in future, in addition to its sizzling Hollywood fare. As of Saturday, 17 December South African aficionados will be able to expand their viewing horizons with hand-picked, multiple award-winning drama and mini-series from around the globe.

The first series to occupy this specially curated foreign language slot on M-Net Edge, channel 102 on DStv Premium, on Saturdays at 21:00 is the much talked-about German spy series Deutschland ’83. Lauded for its aesthetics, tight story lines, phenomenal ‘80s soundtrack and unique humour, this eight-part drama became the most popular foreign language series in the history of UK television when it was screened on Channel 4 this year. It was also the first-ever German-language series to make it onto American network television and raked in rave reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Apart from the Saturday night foreign language series slot, M-Net recently announced that that viewers who love sophisticated story-telling will have access to the very best foreign language movies in future on M-Net Edge as well. These will be screened on Sunday nights at 21:00, starting with the Palestinian film The Idol on Sunday, 18 December.

“We have been re-looking our schedules to add more fresh content to our channels than ever before and are particularly excited about these additions to M-Net Edge,” says Jan du Plessis, Director: M-Net Channels. “The foreign language content fits perfectly into M-Net Edge’s promise to host content that’s a thrill-a-minute for discerning viewers. Over the years, we have had plenty of requests to include foreign language programming onto our schedules and it’s fantastic that we could include these treats on our M-Net Edge schedule, going forward.”

Deutchland ’83, set at the height of the Cold War, centres on Martin Rauch, a young spy caught between two worlds, sent by the East German Intelligence Service on a high-stakes mission to recover NATO’s military plans. Against a backdrop of fervent political feeling and the imminent threat of nuclear war, Martin must leave everything he knows for a new life undercover in the West. It’s not long before this young prodigy discovers that nothing and no one is as they seem, and every friend is a potential enemy; every enemy a possible asset.

The series, which won the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series this year, was created by Anna and Jörg Winger, written by Anna Winger and executive produced by Jörg Winger and Nico Hoffman. It was announced in October that a second season, Deutschland ’86,has been commissioned and there are already talks about a third season, titled Deutschland ’89.
