Durban International Film Festival Brings Germany To South Africa

The 38th edition of the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) is set to captivate audiences with a German Focus, which features ten gripping films by some of Germany’s finest directors, a masterclass by German film industry professionals, as well as networking sessions with the cream of the international film industry crop.

Curated by Alex Moussa Sawadogo, the variety of the films on the lineup is set to keep audiences enthralled. Films such as The People vs Fritz Bauer (which relates to German history after the WWII and the role of the attorney of law Fritz Bauer in confronting the state with its political shortcomings), Paula (which recounts the journey of a well-known early 20th century painter, who discovered her artistic freedom in a more traditional Germany), Goodbye Berlin (a depiction of how the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany merged into one state, taking two young children as the protagonists of a road movie through former East Germany) and Greetings From Fukushima (which breaks the common stereotypes that surround Germans) will leave audiences with a better understanding of German history, culture and people.

While Goodbye Berlin ties in with this year’s overall festival theme, “Transit Tales”, All of a Sudden, Greetings From Fukushima, Paula and Karl Marx City speak to one of this year’s focus areas – women-led films.

DIFF audiences will have the chance to meet key people behind the productions. Anand Batbileg and Tristan Göbel, two of the most promising talents in Germany’s film scene and the main actors of Goodbye Berlin will be in Durban for a Q&A following the German Gala screening of Goodbye Berlin at The Playhouse (Drama Theatre) on 16 July (time to be confirmed). The award winning and family friendly film was made by prominent film maker Fatih Akin who recently presented his last film in Cannes. Tickets for the Gala Screening are available at Computicket.

Another confirmed DIFF guest is Doris Dörrie, director of Greetings From Fukushima. With her unmistakable way of storytelling, she has been one of the towering figures in German cinema since she stirred up the countries’ film scene in 1985 with the gender comedy Men. Christian Schwochow has been awarded for both his cinema and theatre work and will visit DIFF in his capacity as Director of Paula. Petra Epperlein will visit Durban as well to present the extraordinary documentary Karl Marx City, which is a highly personal cinematic journey into her childhood to find the truth about her late father’s suicide and his rumored past in the GDR’s secret service. Furthermore, Directors Karin Steinberger (The Promise) and Stephan Rick (The Dark Side Of The Moon) will be attending DIFF.

The German Focus at DIFF 2017 is presented by German Films, the Goethe-Institut and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in South Africa in cooperation with DIFF.

Alex Moussa Sawadogo, director of the Afrikamera Festival and curator of the German Film Focus at DIFF elaborates: “Long considered as a highly politicized cinema that placed social and political criticism at the heart of its creation, today, German cinema is dominated by a new generation of directors. From diverse origins, free and gifted, these German directors are at the foreground of the vivacity of the production of German cinema, which is recognized all over the world. They bring the concerns of their generation in an intimate sphere on screen and discuss the tribulations of a new Germany that has opened itself to the world – particularly by receiving many people in distress. The German Film Focus at DIFF 2017 presents itself as a unique platform for the discovery of a program of new, diversified, exciting and engaging German films of all kinds – a cinema that places German people from all origins at the heart of its creation.”

Mariëtte Rissenbeek, German Films Service said: “The majority of the films we are presenting have been very successful at a large number of international film festivals. The kinds of stories they tell and the way in which they are told are relevant for a larger international audience, and the director’s handwriting has both a specific and an international element. The strength of German cinema at present is its diversity. Since the year 2000 a number of German films, about German history and personal stories, have been made which achieved international success.”

Lien Heidenreich-Seleme, Head of Cultural Programmes at the Goethe-Institut, added: “The goals of the Goethe-Institut are to support film within the creative industries and to undo with stereotypes through visual storytelling. We do this with training and networking initiatives, through interdisciplinary and pan-African collaborations, and by increasing access to the variety of German filmmaking. In this light, and after our longstanding relationship with DIFF, we are excited about this year’s German focus.”

DIFF, the Goethe-Institut South Africa and Berlinale Talents have a decade-long partnership. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Talents Durban, a programme that began in 2008 as a result of the partnership between DIFF and Berlin International Film Festival’s Berlinale Talents, with the support of the Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy.

Talents Durban is an annual five-day training and mentorship programme that runs at DIFF, aimed at empowering emerging 27 African screenwriters and directors working on projects for film, television, web series and content for mobile platforms. The 10th edition will take place from 14-18th of July under the theme “Perspectives: Seeing things differently”, which is derived from the observation that film alone may not change the world but can show the world when it changes. Talents Durban looks to not only highlight the stories of Africa, but create a culture of Africans telling their own stories, and most importantly from their experience and perspective of cutting edge and modern cinematic technology. Talents Durban is happy to welcome the German directors Doris Dörrie, Petra Epperlein and the two main characters of Fatih Akin’s film Goodbye Berlin, Anand Batbileg and Tristan Göbel. As part of Talents Durban and in association with the Goethe-Institut and FIPRESCI (International Association of Film Critics), the Talent Press programme will provide again mentorship and hands-on training in the craft of film criticism to three emerging African journalists.

Furthermore, the Goethe-Institut will present “New Dimensions – Virtual Reality Africa”, a brand new package of four VR productions from Kenya, Ghana and Senegal. The works were co-produced with Cape Town based Electric South. To be shown at the Durban FilmMart (DFM), they allow a glimpse into the fascinating new opportunities that technology provides for visual storytelling.

DIFF is one of Africa’s leading and longest running festivals, and runs from 13 to 23 July in Durban, South Africa.

Paris Can Wait : Review

Anne (Diane Lane – Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Inside Out), the wife of successful movie producer Michael (Alec Baldwin – The Boss Baby, Blue Jasmine), takes a slow road trip from the south of France to Paris with one of her husband’s associates, Jacques (Arnaud Viard).

Paris Can Wait (Bonjour Anne) is a great insight into the tourist and food places of France, but the story tends to meander, much like the roads taken as Anne and Jacques drive. This, while informative, does feel more like a tourism commercial, than a plot with story.

While funny in several areas, the focus does tend to be on the characters and food, with a side story of the stagnation of Michael and Anne’s marriage, and his focus being too much on the mundane and repetitive of his work.

While touted as mainstream commercial, it seems Paris Can Wait would be more suited for an arts circuit, where an audience would seek a film such as this, rather than gamble on one, from the perspective of an audience more used to computer effects than monologue.

Paris Can Wait is directed by  Eleanor Coppola, making her narrative feature debut at the age of 80.

An interesting film, but likely with limited appeal. It will certainly inform, but might just miss the mark when asked to entertain.

Paris Can Wait opens 30 June 2017 in South African cinemas.

Hit series NCIS Honoured with International TV Audience Award at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival

NCIS season 14, currently broadcast on M-Net 101 every Saturday at 19:30 has been lauded as the #1 drama series on U.S. television for the eighth consecutive year. The series is the most watched drama TV series in the world, according to Eurodata TV Worldwide. On Tuesday 20 June at the 57th Monte-Carlo Television Festival the global powerhouse series received the prestigious 12th International Television Audience Award for a Drama TV Series. NCIS has now won the award three out of four years.

The annual International Audience Award is presented jointly by the Monte-Carlo Television Festival and Eurodata TV Worldwide. It rewards programs that delivered the highest ratings in 2016 worldwide across five continents in three categories: Drama TV Series, Comedy TV Series and Telenovelas/Soap Operas.

International Audience Award nominees were pre-selected among the top 15 imported fiction programs in 61 countries, representing almost 3 billion potential viewers. NCIS garnered more than 47 million viewers worldwide in 2016.

About NCIS season 14:

NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) is more than just an action drama. With liberal doses of humor, it’s a show that focuses on the sometimes complex and always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations. NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a former Marine gunnery sergeant whose skills as an investigator are unmatched, leads this troupe of colorful personalities. Gibbs, a man of few words, only needs a look to explain it all. The team includes NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee, an MIT graduate with a brilliance for computers, and Probationary Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop, a mysterious mixture of analytic brilliance, fierce determination and idealism who specializes in international threat assessment and global preparation. The newest members to join the team include: the charismatic, unpredictable and resilient NCIS Special Agent Nicholas “Nick” Torres, who has spent most of his career on solo undercover assignments; NCIS Special Agent Alexandra “Alex” Quinn, a quick-witted and talented agent who left to be an instructor until Gibbs lured her back to the field; and MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves, a successful and clever international agent who’s on loan to NCIS as a terror liaison during these complicated times. Assisting the team is the youthful and energetic forensic specialist Abby Sciuto, a talented scientist whose sharp mind matches her unconventional style and eclectic tastes; medical examiner Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, who knows it all because he’s seen it all – and he’s not afraid to let you know it; and Ducky’s protégé, the naive Assistant Medical Examiner, Jimmy Palmer. Overseeing operations is NCIS Director Leon Vance, an intelligent, highly trained agent who can always be counted on to shake up the status quo.

From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties.

The cast includes: Mark Harmon (NCIS Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs), Pauley Perrette (Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto), Sean Murray (NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee), Wilmer Valderrama (NCIS Special Agent Nicholas “Nick” Torres), Jennifer Esposito (NCIS Special Agent Alexandra “Alex” Quinn), Brian Dietzen (Jimmy Palmer), Emily Wickersham (Probationary Agent Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop), Duane Henry (MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves), Rocky Carroll (NCIS Director Leon Vance) and David McCallum (Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard)

More Than A Million Votes Determine The Voice SA’s Top 5

With only two weeks to the grand finale of M-Net’s prestigious singing contest The Voice SA, the Top 5 talent were announced tonight. Fans cast more than a million votes this week to take Caroline Brussow, Craig Lucas, Fatman, Josh Ansley and Samantha Leonard to next Sunday’s spectacular semi-finals. This means that PJ Pretorius (26) from #TeamKaren had to bid the show farewell tonight.

“Never stop dreaming,” PJ’s Coach Karen Zoid told him after host Lungile Radu revealed the final voting results. “Go out there and make a name for yourself – I’ve got your back, always,” she promised.

In his original Blind audition the affable young singer from Secunda received three chair turns from the coaches for his rendition of Coldplay’s “Yellow”, and beat Durban’s Chico Muya in the Battle rounds performing Bruce Springsteen’s “Secret Garden”. In the Knockouts he beat out Port Elizabeth’s Emma Ellis with an acoustic version of the Pink anthem “Perfect”, accompanying himself on the guitar. He made it through to the Top 8 with a dose of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One” in the second Live Showstopper show at the Mosaïek Teatro, but his Top 7 performance of the Temper Trap hit “Sweet Disposition” landed him in the Danger Zone, and PJ’s tender interpretation of John Lennon’s “Imagine” in the Top 6 show last week turned out to be his final performance.

#TeamKahn’s Fatman (41) from Bela Bela and #TeamKaren’s Samantha Leonard (24) from Kimberley found themselves in the Danger Zone with PJ tonight, and had to give the performances of their lives in tonight’s Top 5 show.

Up first tonight was #TeamKahn’s Craig Lucas (23) from Cape Town, setting an upbeat tone with the late Amy Winehouse’s classic “Valerie”. “You’re an amazing vocalist, it’s natural for you,” Lira told him, and Bobbie van Jaarsveld agreed. “You’re an entertainer by heart,” he said. Craig’s Coach Kahn Morbee said he has “the X-Factor”, and “I believe, regardless of who wins this competition, you will be a superstar,” he said.
Craig’s voting number is 01.

Musical theatre veteran Josh Ansley (31) tackled James Arthur’s hit, “Say You Won’t Let Go” tonight. Coach Kahn commended Josh for taking a risk with a more modern sound these days. “Your voice is phenomenal, I’m envious of your voice,” he admitted. Karen Zoid remarked that Josh had undergone a serious transformation over the past few weeks. “Your soul is shining,” she told him. And Josh’s Coach, Bobby van Jaarsveld, promised that there was even more to come! “Next week he’s going to blow your minds!” he grinned.
Josh’s voting number is 15.

For #TeamKaren, Samantha Leonard (24) from Kimberley touched the audience’s hearts with the wildly popular Brandi Carlile ballad “The Story”. Kahn thought it was an excellent song choice that showed off her vocal range. “You are a full package!” Coach Lira raved, calling Sam a cross between Shania Twain and Riana Nel. “She is ready to go out there and tour, and make lots of money!” a proud Coach Karen exclaimed happily.
Sam’s voting number is 08.

The Pride of Bela Bela, #TeamKahn’s Fatman (41), continued his streak of interpreting big power ballads when he took on Robbie Williams’ iconic “Angels”, accompanying himself at the grand piano. “Daai was baie mooi,” Lira told him in Afrikaans. “This is the only competition in the world that a dream like yours could come true,” she noted happily. “And you’re suddenly the fashion guy as well!” Bobby joked. “I think what you’ve showed throughout out the show is that you’re an accomplished musician,” said Kahn, proudly sporting a Fatman-hat.
# Fatman’s voting number is 02.

#TeamBobby’s sweetheart Caroline Brussow (32) from Bloemfontein belted out her second Sia track of the season, the smash hit “Titanium”, and received a standing ovation from the audience at the Mosaïek Teatro. “What a performance!” Karen shouted happily. “You are titanium, you’re amazingly strong, and I believe you will be very successful in your life,” she told Caroline Grace. Coach Kahn enjoyed that Caroline had showed more of her vulnerable side tonight, and “that’s why you are the best female audience in the show!” Coach Bobby said proudly.
Caroline Grace’s voting number is 13.

Voting for the Top 5 opened at the end of the show and will close on Tuesday, 27 June at 22:00. Tickets for The Voice SA live shows are available from Computicket.

The Voice South Africa, sponsored by Dialdirect, is broadcast every Sunday night on M-Net channel 101 at 17:30 and every Monday night at 18:00 on M-Net City channel 115.

Q & A Isaac Hempstead Wright and Aidan Gillen, completed in London, May 2017 for Game of Thrones season 7:

Isaac Hempstead Wright
(stars as Bran Stark)

Q: Where do we find Bran as we begin this season?

IHW: In the first episode we find Bran in a bit of a predicament. He’s lost Hodor who was basically his legs for the past six seasons. We’ve lost his direwolf, who has got a very deep connection with Bran and is practically a part of him as well as also being quite a valuable protection asset. Coldhands has also left him [Benjen Stark], who came and saved the day last time. So it’s now just him and Meera at the foot of the Wall.

Q: Is he even Bran anymore?

IHW: Not really. On top of all that he has now got this huge responsibility upon his shoulders of being the Three-eyed Raven. He’s no longer Bran Stark. He remembers what it was like to be Bran Stark, but then he remembers everything that’s ever happened in the universe ever. He’s got all this knowledge about Jon Snow and all the knowledge about the origin of the White Walkers – which may come in handy for defeating them. It all means that Bran is a really, really valuable asset for Westeros right now. He needs to make sure this information gets to the right people in time. As such, at the start of season seven Bran is on a mission to get to the right place and save the day.

Q: Crucially he is one of the few who knows what the enemy in the Great War is…

IHW: Yes, in fact Bran more than anyone, because he is now basically the arch enemy of the Night’s King. They are sworn enemies from the first day of time, the Three-eyed Raven and the Night’s King. So Bran knows better than anyone I think the terror and fear they should all be feeling with this threat looming over them.

Q: What’s it been like playing a character who began as a boy but is now barely human?

IHW: It was tricky to work out how exactly we would play him. It was clear that he needed to have this kind of emotionless, soulless, slightly mysterious aura to him, but we didn’t want it to be really dull and monotone. So it was trying to capture the fact that there was this massively interesting spark within him of basically knowing everything ever. At the same time the practical effects on the human mind that it would have were huge. Basically, David and Dan said read the ‘Watchmen’ comics: it’s like Dr Manhattan. When I was playing him instead of just focussing on the scene, I’d be listening to what the other characters were saying but at the same time trying to rush through millions of things that had happened in past scenes and thinking of a moment in an episode in season two – because that’s exactly what’s going through Bran’s head. He’s got this whirlwind of information spinning around the whole time – ‘Oh that happened, that happened, that happened’. It’s like he’s not really in any fixed time.

Aidan Gillen
(stars as Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish)

Q: Where do we find Littlefinger as we begin this season?

AG: When we first catch up with Littlefinger it’s almost like a direct push from when we last saw him in Season Six. Then, he was standing against the wall in the Great Hall in Winterfell, in the shadows. For his first scene in Season Seven, he is in the same room so I thought I would stand in exactly the same place, at exactly the same angle – that could be interesting. We left him wondering what he’s up to and we take up asking what he’s up to now? Obviously he’s working some of his magic on the power structure at Winterfell. It is now under the command of Jon.

You saw through Season 6 and maybe even from the end of Season 5 that Littlefinger been trying to sow some seeds of doubt with Sansa. Doubts about her brother’s validity as a leader, in fact doubts about his validity as a brother at all. How much of a brother is he really, you know, biologically? How much credit did you, Sansa, really get for saving him down at the Battle of the Bastards? Don’t you deserve a little more? That’s Littlefinger’s thing – he’ll push people. He’ll nudge people in a certain direction but then they don’t always take it. And Sansa doesn’t always take the bait because she’s getting clever.

Q: Why does he do it? Is it for power, for fun?

AG: For the fun would be a correct answer. It’s not just about the result; it’s about the thrill of manipulating on that scale. The danger of it: even though his plans are extremely well thought through they could go wrong easily at any point and that would be end of story. But if you don’t take major risks you’re not going to get major results. For him it is about the fun of it, the game of it – and you want to be seen having fun. That makes the character even more interesting to look at. If it’s just all devious and nasty, people will lose interest I think. So I’ve always tried to have a bit of fun with it and show a bit of a playful side.

Q: Do fans boo and hiss when they meet you?

AG: I don’t get booed and hissed that much. I was greeted very cordially by a group of something like 12 students off a train in Manchester the other day. They were like, ‘Littlefinger!’ It was as if they’d met their favourite uncle just stepping off the train with sweets. I think some people are confused. They say to me, ‘Hey you know, your character confuses me because… I like you.’ And that’s what you want in a villainous role I guess. It’s important to show that this is somebody who can get away with things, precisely because people do find him trustworthy in some way or attractive. Without that it just wouldn’t work. And his plans are so well laid, they go so far back you know – there’s a certain glee watching them unfold.

ACT | UJ Unlearns How To Conference

#CreativeUprising, the 5th ACT | UJ Creative Conference will engage with South African Art Education in its current state and possible future.

This iteration of the conference is about unlearning and rethinking how we do things and present things. From curating a conference to how we talk about art education in South Africa, the aim of ACT | UJ Conference has been to share knowledge with the view of enabling, advancing and inspiring creative South Africa.

“There are many conferences and symposiums this year that are investigating art education. We see this as an indication that this content is pertinent to our industry and that we are in a position to add to this conversation,” shares Anastasia Pather, the conference Project Manager. “The conference is not about repetition or making bold claims. We will be recapping and reporting on previous conferences like NEPAD and ASSITEJ with the view to give our delegates a refresher on what has already been discussed so they can share that information in their networks and establish how they can progress those ideas further.”

To ensure there is no ranking of content, each engagement has been carefully curated and is equally valuable and as such the conference will have no keynote speakers. The conference organisers feel that there is no room for hierarchy when talking about modernising colonial knowledge systems with an aim for it to be appropriate and inclusive to all its users. Instead, #CreativeUprising will be presented by Ashraf Jamal, Puleng Plessie, David Andrew, Alison Kearney, Thuli Gamedze, Nike Romano, Prof Mzob Mboya, and Motsumi Makhene, among a list of art education specialists, thought provocateurs and industry leaders.

“The conference is not about the customary PowerPoint or lengthy panel discussions, it is about Art Education which comes in many shapes and forms,” Pather imparts. “Art Education happens in a classroom, in a community centre, on the street, in a book, on the stage, in a protest, on museum walls, and through people. “CreativeUprising is a creative conference about capturing the evolving and stimulating nature of Art Education. We have paired academics and educators with performance artists so their arguments have the room to jump off the screen and live on our stage and that delegates are not left with small fonts and bullet points to try and decipher,” she elucidates.

Pather continued that the conference would not dedicate resources and time to artisanal lunches and elaborate conference printouts. Resources will be employed to facilitate engaging presentations and keeping the ticket price affordable. In addition to this, the needs of the participants have been taken into account, especially in lieu of the timing. Understanding that students and educators would not be able to take two full days off, they have structured the programme to make it feasible for delegates to attend selected presentations, attend between classes or after school.

Full conference passes will be are available for R300, while those attending only selected presentations purchase the R150 pass. Student prices will be half of that and there is an option to purchase lunch at R60 per day. Alternatively, delegates are welcome to pack their own lunch. “This conference is about contributing to the betterment of Art Education and not about bells, whistles or profit,” explains Pather.

The Arts & Culture Trust is sponsoring fifty passes to attend the ACT | UJ Creative Conference, as ACT acknowledges the difficulty that some students, creative practitioners and arts educators face in being able to attend the conference. Please note that preference will be given to young female arts educators and arts education students. Recipients of sponsored registrations will be entrusted to make the most of their conference attendance in terms of gathering information, networking, learning and interchanging ideas with other delegates with the view of making a contribution to their careers, businesses and organisations and the creative sector in general.

The #CreativeUprising will focus on providing a platform for students and educators to talk about how Art Education needs to change and how to achieve it. Workshops in visual literacy, learning STEM subjects through the arts and entrepreneurial skills will be offered at the conference. “We want to stimulate conversation so that educators can collaborate with art centres and artists already changing the face of art education to refresh what we teach and how we teach,” Pather shares. Through the presentation of performance art as an educational tool, and presenting a case for Shakespeare’s Macbeth in Xhosa and sign language to be used to discuss ethical African leadership, this will be a visually stimulating, interactive and provocative offering.

“Questions need to be asked about whether art curriculums should include basic entrepreneurial skills to empower artists and graduates after school and students and educators should have equal opportunity to contribute to the discourse in order for it to hold a sustainable relevance for its future users,” says Pather.

The conference will offer a platform to collect input and offer a place for delegates to ask questions and get answers from various role players such as the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Arts & Culture. The goal is for decision makers, students, art educators and professional creatives to be in the same room to envisage a workable plan for the future.

#CreativeUprising will take place at the UJ Arts Centre on their Kingsway campus from the 27th – 28th July and is for educators looking to expand their practice, art educators from formal and non-formal institutions and centres, academics and art learners.

Please note that applications close on the 30th June 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by email no later than 10 July 2017.

The 2017 ACT | UJ Creative Conference is presented by the Arts & Culture Trust and UJ Arts & Culture in partnership with SAMRO Foundation and Drama for Life.
