Collide (DVD) : Review

Film

To save his girlfriend, Juliette Marne (Felicity Jones – Rogue One, Inferno, The Theory of Everything), an American backpacker, Casey Stein (Nicholas Hoult – X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: Days of Future Past), gets involved with an eccentric gangster, Geran (Ben Kingsley – The Jungle Book, Self/less), with a plan to steal from Geran’s partner Hagen Kahl (Anthony Hopkins – Transformers: The Last Knight, Red 2). Casey will be their driver, but as events unfold, he is chased across Cologne high-speed Autobahn.

A high speed thrill ride, with an exceptionally talented cast, leading to less fight, more character. Collide is not one of those non-stop action films that relies on explosions to do its bidding. No, this one brings a good story, with solidly developed characters. Throwing in a few fun chases, crashes, shootouts, and you have enough to keep you going for a while.

Hoult embodies the gallant guy, trying to save his love. Jones is her usual great self as the damsel needing saving, and a delight to behold. With Kingsley’s character one you’re not quite sure if you should see him as eccentric, or crazy, and he wavers unnervingly between each as the story progresses. And Hopkins, calm, collected, evil personified as a nasty that you should never cross.

Pour all this into an electric plot, one that is easy enough to follow, and Collide is a fun way to while away an evening.

Disc

Overall, the disc for Collide is of a high technical quality, with a good main feature. There are no bonus features on the disc, apart from the trailers that autoplay at the beginning.

Collide is available now, to purchase on disc, in South Africa.

Video

Video is encoded at a high average bitrate, with no visible artefacts on screen. Colours are vibrant, with no colour bleed, and detail is maintained in darker scenes.

Viewers with the requisite hardware or software can scale up to a larger or higher resolution screen, should they wish.

Audio

Audio is encoded at a high average bitrate, with dialogue clear via the centre channel. The bulk of the soundtrack is handled via the front channels, with use of the surrounds in the more action oriented scenes.

Navigation

Navigation is simple, and easy to follow, with text links on the menus. The main menu has a static background, with accompanying music. There are options to play the main feature, chapter selection, and audio selection.

The chapter selection sub-menus provide four large, colour, motion thumbnails. While these are numbered, they are not labelled, so some guesswork is needed to navigate to a specific part of the main feature.

The audio sub-menu allows one to choose between 5.1 and 2.0 soundtracks.

Bonus Features

There are no bonus features on the disc, except for trailers for The Founder, The Promise, Army of One, which autoplay at the beginning of the disc.

These can be fast-forwarded, but not skipped individually. They can not be accessed again via the disc menu.

Despicable Me 3 : Review

Gru (Steve Carell – Despicable Me 2, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) is fired from the Anti-Villain League, after failing to capture former child star turned real-life bad boy, Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). With Gru and Lucy (Kristen Wiig – Ghostbusters, Sausage Party) now out of work, it is not long before Gru meets his long-lost charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru (also Steve Carell), who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.

Despicable Me 3, the third instalment in the series, with the Minions getting their own solo film.  And it feels as if each new film ups the ante for animation quality and detail, but slides a little bit on the story. While this latest foray is not bad, it does not carry that wow factor of the first film. The Minions are there in smaller doses, and therefor more manageable, there is a story to be engrossed in, and there are funny bits. But there is that little spark of magic missing.

The film is funny, but the laughs are more related to one’s own point of reference. There are several scenes where you realise you should be laughing, but it’s just not quite there.

The animation, and world, on screen is superb. One can not fault Illumination for this. And the attention to detail is mind-boggling. The vibrant colours, the cityscapes, all top notch.

With several of the preview audience being children, the lack of laughter was a tad noticeable. Even the yellow Minions failed to evoke shrieks of giggles. Although in lower dosages, they are a lot better than when in a full length movie of their own.

Despicable Me 3 perhaps tries too hard, trying to capture its youth, instead of innovating. it’s a fun film, but could have been so much more. It’s entertaining, and will keep the kids occupied, but lacks that “adult level” to the film that also lets parents survive. It tries valiantly, but just can’t match up to it’s older siblings. Despite all this, it’s still one to go see.

Despicable Me 3 opens 30 June 2017 in South African cinemas.

M-Net Gives The Voice SA Talent Another Chance

M-Net has decided that none of the five remaining talent in The Voice SA will be going home this coming Sunday. In addition, M-Net has also given Luke Lovemore and PJ Pretorius, who received the fewest votes in the previous two weeks, the option to return to the show. As such, the voting lines have been closed.

The decision was made in the interests of fairness and transparency, after M-Net was alerted about alleged paid-for marketing efforts (boosted posts) on some talent’s personal social media accounts. Paid-for marketing, which is against the rules of the competition, can cause voting spikes which could provide an unfair advantage. This prompted M-Net to conduct an investigation into the way in which these efforts could have affected the outcome of the voting results. It was ascertained that only the past two voting periods, in which Luke Lovemore and PJ Pretorius left the competition, could have been affected.

“Despite our best efforts, we could not determine with certainty whether misconduct took place and what the impact was on the voting results. We believe the fairest solution under these circumstances is to give all the affected talent another chance,” says Nkateko Mabaso, GM for M-Net South Africa. “The Voice SA has proved to be an excellent platform for launching the careers of new singing talent and we would like encourage our viewers to continue to vote for their favourites”.

The winner of The Voice SA will be determined by the votes of the viewing public and will be announced during the finale on Sunday, 9 July. The vote results are independently computed by Deloitte and Touche and confirmed against the vote results determined by M-Net.
