Experience The Romance And Poeticness Of Puccini And Comedy With Donizetti Exclusively At Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau In March 2018

Opera lovers can look forward to a feast of melodic serenade in March 2018, more especially because South Africa’s very own soprano songstress, Pretty Yende will star in L’Elisir d’Amore, exclusively at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau on the 10th of March 2018. That’s not the only treat, it will be followed by La Bohème that releases on 24 March 2018.

L’Elisir d’Amore

South Africa’s very own Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met as the spirited Adina opposite Matthew Polenzani. Bartlett Sher’s production is charming, with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing.  L’Elisir d’Amore has been among the most consistently popular operatic comedies for almost two centuries. The story deftly combines comic archetypes with a degree of genuine character development rare in works of this type. Its ending is as much a foregone conclusion as it would be in a romantic comedy film today—the joy is in the journey, and Donizetti created one of his most instantly appealing scores for this ride.

Screening date: 10 March 2018.

ESTIMATED RUN TIME: 2 HOURS 39 MINUTES WITH ONE INTERMISSION

La Bohème

La Bohème, the passionate, timeless, and indelible story of love among young artists in Paris, can stake its claim as the world’s most popular opera. It has a marvellous ability to make a powerful first impression and to reveal unsuspected treasures after dozens of hearings. At first glance, La Bohème is the definitive depiction of the joys and sorrows of love and loss; on closer inspection, it reveals the deep emotional significance hidden in the trivial things—a bonnet, an old overcoat, a chance meeting with a neighbour—that make up our everyday lives.

Screening date: 24 March 2018

ESTIMATED RUN TIME: 2 HOURS 55 MINUTES WITH TWO INTERMISSIONS.

All films will show at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor sites: Rosebank Nouveau, Gateway Commercial, Brooklyn Nouveau and V&A Waterfront Nouveau. At Somerset and Blue Route Mall in Cape Town, Bedford Square in Johannesburg and Garden Route Mall in George.

The season, as mentioned above, also features Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, starring South African born Pretty Yende in her first Met performances as the spirited Adina with Matthew Polenzani reprising Nemorino, and Puccini’s La Bohème featuring Sonya Yoncheva and Michael Fabiano as the young Parisian lovers, Mimì and Rodolfo.
