I, Tonya : Review

Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie – Suicide Squad, The Legend of Tarzan), a driven, and competitive ice skater, is rising through the ranks, with a shot at the US figure skating championships. She comes from a poor background, with a seemingly uncaring mother, LaVona (Allison Janney – Minions, Mr. Peabody & Sherman). Her ex-husband, Jeff (Sebastian Stan – Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War), and his friend take it upon themselves to sway the odds in her favour from rival Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver). Soon Tonya’s future in the sport is thrown into doubt and controversy.

A look at the now infamous event that shocked sports viewers around the world, as told from the information garnered from news, the courts, and accounts by those involved. There is some doubt as to the extent of the involvement from the side of Tonya Harding, which is left with the audience, where one can then debate whether justice for her was served, and whether she should have got a harsher punishment. One also feels for rival Nancy Kerrigan, with all the physical and emotional pain she must have gone through after the events.

The film is told from the perspective of Harding and company.

I, Tonya presents the story to the viewer, without drawing all conclusions. The talent from the cast in depicting their respective characters goes a long way to bringing that world to life, and the story telling and visual of the film medium fill in the rest. This talent acknowledge in the nominations received for Robbie and Janney for Oscars.

A great deal of understanding is projected, forgoing judgement. I, Tonya, a dramatic film, with life, even though depicting how mistakes and incidents can change the course of a life. Entertaining, interesting, and full of talent.

I, Tonya opens 16 February 2018 in South African cinemas.
