Last week Sunday, M-Net’s popular cooking reality show My Kitchen Rules SA took viewers to Jozi’s trendy creative hub Maboneng, where food buddies Donald and Luyanda set up their Instant Restaurant. In sharp contrast to the vibe of a spot that recently made the Forbes Top 10 list of coolest places in the world, this week’s setting is a neighbourhood that’s not usually associated with gourmet cooking.
Cape Town cousins Ash and Chris are hosting their Instant Resturant at a community centre in Manenberg on the Cape Flats, where they grew up together in a small two-bedroom apartment. The charming cooking pair, who are both seasoned travellers, have made it their life task to put Manenberg on the map and at the same time bring the world’s flavours to their own doorstep.
But will their homely and hearty dishes, infused with global flavours, impress the discerning celebrity judges and hyper-critical dinner guests? The pressure is on like never before. To secure a spot in the next round of the competition, they have to work around the clock and against time in a challenging new space.
Tune in this Sunday, 29 July, to see if they can overtake Donald and Luyanda, whose 55 out of 100 put them in the danger zone on the leaderboard. Married couple Maritsa and Maradine from Bloemfontein are sitting pretty at the top with 70 and are assured of a place in the next phase.
My Kitchen Rules SA is broadcast on M-Net channel 101 every Sunday night at 18:00.
