The Fightback Against Cable Theft

Frustrated with random power outages? Stranded, without phone connections or transport? Finally, crack investigators have real tools to fight back and bring cable theft criminals to book. The crime trend of cable theft borders on sabotage, as it targets copper cables from essential infrastructure such as power lines and communication networks. Highly organised syndicates rake in millions of Rands in this illicit trade. Carte Blanche meets law enforcers who are now able to take back the turf effectively, as new legislation ensures punishment that fits the crime, with sentences exceeding those for murder, for those caught stealing or selling stolen copper cables.

The Mad 4 Waves Atlantic Challenge

Fewer people have rowed across the Atlantic than have reached the summit of Everest, journeyed to the North Pole or ventured into space. In a 38- to 50-day, 5000km challenge where experience is everything, the Mad 4 Waves rowing team – four 22-year old university friends – have become the youngest four-man team to row unaided across the Atlantic, even setting a World Record. Carte Blanche meets the youngsters who didn’t shrink back from one of the toughest challenges on the planet.

Inside South African Zoos

Zoos are popular facilities where wild animals are locked up in cages and behind glass displays for public entertainment and education. But increasingly international conservation experts are questioning the usefulness and ethics of keeping these animals in captivity. In South Africa, there have been rising reports of animal cruelty in zoos, as municipalities struggle to manage them effectively. Carte Blanche goes inside some of the country’s most controversial menageries.

Drug Lessons from Lisbon

After decades of exposing South Africans’ struggle with drugs and related crime hotspots, Carte Blanche travels to Portugal where a radical policy of decriminalising the use and possession of all drugs has been tested for 18 years and has yielded extraordinary results. With a marked reduction in addiction, overdoses, HIV infection and drug-related crime, we ask could SA take this proven route?
