Brand New Seasons Of Modern Family And The Big Bang Theory

Brand new seasons of Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory!
5 Days to go!

It’s that kind of Magic! Brand new seasons of two of the best sitcoms can be seen on M-Net channel 101 from next week Wednesday, 2 November. The cast of Modern Family Season 8 return for another round of family fun at 19:30, whilst brilliant physicists Leonard and Sheldon (and their exasperated significant others) are back with the much awaited season 10 of The Big Bang Theory at 20:00.

The Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker clan of Modern Family find themselves scattered all over the place in the season premiere, when the summer vacation takes Phil, Claire and the kids to New York; Jay, Gloria and their kids to Mexico, and Cam and Mitch find themselves all the way out in Missouri with Lily. Luckily Father’s Day proves to be the perfect opportunity to bring this family together-along with all their hilarious drama.

Later in the season, we’ll find that Claire struggles to be the head honcho at Pritchett’s Closets, especially with Jay back in the fold. At home, Phil stars enjoying more hobbies, while Gloria’s hot sauce business starts picking up steam, and Mitch and Cam will continue to see a parade of interesting guests frequent their upstairs rental unit. There’s also plenty of Modern Family style bonding-one misunderstanding at a time-to keep the comedy going.

Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill as Jay Pritchett, Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy, Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy, Sofia Vergara as Gloria Pritchett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker, Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy, Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy, Ariel Winter as Alex Dunphy, Rico Rodriguez as Manny Delgado, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily Tucker-Pritchett and Jeremy Maguire as Joe Pritchett.

Everyone’s favourite scientists prepare for another Emmy Award-winning season of The Big Bang Theory, and our group of socially awkward nerds and their respective partners have a lot of growing up to do; in the tenth season premiere, Leonard and Penny’s wedding ceremony brings forth some unexpected family drama- and family comedy-for everyone involved.

As always, some of the best laughs come from Dr Cooper himself, and here’s a few gems from our list of favourite Sheldon Cooper-isms:

1. Bus pants: as Sheldon explains, “pants one wears over one’s regular pants when one sits on bus seats that other people have previously sat on”. Obviously.

2. The Roommate Agreement: Leonard and Sheldon thought of everything from where to order takeaways to what to do in the event of a zombie apocalypse, and documented the rules that govern their friendship and living situation. It’s seen them avoid many potentially tense moments.

3. Bazinga! Pranking a mate? Throwing around a little playful banter? Beating someone at their own game? There’s only one thing to say: Bazinga!

And the crowd favourite:

4. “I’m not crazy. My mother had me tested.”

The Big Bang Theory stars Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter, Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper, Kaley Cuoco as Penny, Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz, Kunal Nayyar as Rajesh Koothrappali, Mayim Bialik as Amy Farah Fowler and Melissa Rauch as Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz.

Shark Tank SA Episode 5, Sunday 30 October

Entrepreneurs working from out of their own homes tempt the Sharks this week

Now that all five of the Sharks in M-Net and Telkom SA’s Shark Tank South Africa have invested in a number of diverse lcoal businesses, the gloves come off this week as they start snapping at each other in the face of some brand new budding business owners.

Amongst the entrepreneurs who are brave enough to step into the tank this week are a farmer who wants to bring tech to agriculture, a young biokineticist with a unique invention to relieve pain, and two sets of entrepreneurs who are running their small businesses straight out of their homes and need some capital to grow – and fast.

As usual the Sharks are not scared to let rip when faced with some outlandish claims and questionable financial projections, but between all of the harsh – and even sarcastic – commentary, this week’s episode will provide plenty of excellent tips for business owners who want to find out how to pitch their businesses to any investors, whether it be the Sharks themselves, venture capitalists or banks. As tech guru Vinny Lingham wisely puts it: “The best investments are made in entrepreneurs who are going to be successful without you, not because of you.”

To find out more about the businesses that have been featured on the series so far, especially if you’re interested in supporting them with an order or purchase, go to or follow the conversation about the show on Twitter @MNetSharkTank with the hashtag #SharkTankSA.

Shark Tank SA, sponsored by Telkom SA, is screened on Sundays between 18:00 and 19:00 on M-Net 101. This corresponds with the timeslot on a Sunday when all DStv customers can get a taste of what’s available on M-Net 101, so if you’re not a DStv Premium customer, you can also go to channel 101 to watch Shark Tank SA. The series will also be available on DStv Catch Up and streamed live on DStv Now.

Shark Tank South Africa, Episode 4, Sunday 23 October

Two more entrepreneurs receive deals amidst some strong criticism in the tank

In tonight’s episode of M-Net and Telkom SA’s Shark Tank South Africa, the five business mogul Sharks who are tasked with investing in local entrepreneurs were left gob-smacked by some, and inspired by others. In total there were two more deals struck this week, with the youngest Shark in the tank, Marnus Broodryk, finally making his first investment in a delicious micro brewed beer company!

Geologist Jacques Nel and his four-legged friend and mascot of his brand, bulldog Lady Trinity, were looking for an investment in his micro-brewery named “Ja Brew”. The Sharks loved Jacques’ branding and the potential for growth in the micro brewing market, but had concerns around the fact that he was still waiting for his liquor license. However, Shark Marnus, who has previously owned a vegan restaurant and understood the challenges that come with acquiring a liquor license, felt that he could have a lot of fun developing the business with Jacques, rather than simply investing. Marnus offered Jacques a R250 000 loan in exchange for a 50% stake in “Ja Brew” and committed to helping Jacques lay the essential ground work to get his business up and running properly. “Take the deal!” fellow Shark Gil Oved advised Jacques, which he was happy to do.

The second entrepreneur to present the Sharks with some bait that they were interested in was 40-year-old media consultant Taryn Gill. Taryn came into the tank tonight with her company “Perfect Hair”, a collection of proudly African products for African women. Taryn’s naturally made hair care products are targeted at all different hair texture types, for women, children and men, and she wanted to use the Sharks’ investment to open up concept stores. Most of the Sharks told her that this was an unrealistic idea, and not the right direction required to successfully grow her business.

But Taryn’s personality and hustling attitude is what really got the Sharks excited. She received her first deal offer from marketing guru Gil Oved, who offered her R250 000 for 50% equity in her business, with the view to take the marketing of her products to the next level. Romeo, however, came on board with a deal that included his secure base of distribution channels, as well as more money for less equity. Romeo’s offer was R400 000 for a 40% share in Taryn’s business, but it wasn’t over yet! Vinny also chipped in on the basis of his experience in e-commerce. Wanting Taryn to keep her business sales online, Vinny offered to partner with Gil for the same offer that Romeo gave her, which Gil also agreed to. As if this wasn’t already an incredibly hard decision for Taryn to make, Romeo then introduced a game-changer by offering his wife, business woman and former Miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo, as a partner in the business, specifically to focus on the marketing side of things. It was an offer that Taryn simply couldn’t refuse, and with that, Romeo clinched his second deal of the season.

Unfortunately there were two blue-sky-thinking visionaries who came into the Shark Tank tonight with ideas that were possibly a little too big for the Sharks to stomach. Inventor Wayne Goelst came into the tank with his product, “Glo-V” hand signaling gloves, with an unusual deal proposal: R85 000 investment in exchange for 85% equity in his business! Wayne invented his reflective gloves particularly for South African taxi commuters to stay visible after dark, and to aid them in signaling taxis effectively. Unfortunately the Sharks felt that Wayne required them to do all of the work to get his product onto market, and for that reason, they all declined.

Another unlucky entrepreneur who entered the tank was engineer Arthur Blake, with his unique business aimed at revolutionising student housing, “Modular Projects”. Arthur came to the Sharks asking for a whopping sum of R48 Million in exchange for 20% equity in his business. As the developer of modular construction container buildings such as 27 Boxes in Melville, Arthur wanted the Sharks to invest despite having a business that is currently not generating any income due to his main partner having withdrawn a year ago. “I think you’re crazy to come in here and ask for R48 Million for an idea alone. I’m out,” Dawn Nathan-Jones summed up as the rest of the Sharks also categorically declined Arthur’s proposal.

To find out more about the businesses, especially if you’re interested in supporting them with an order or purchase, go to or follow the conversation about the show on Twitter @MNetSharkTank with the hashtag #SharkTankSA.

Shark Tank SA, sponsored by Telkom SA, is screened on Sundays between 18:00 and 19:00 on M-Net 101. The Big Fish Are Tempted With Crazy Bait In The Pressure-Cooker Shark Tank

An adorable bull dog; sweet home-brewed beer; glow-in-the-dark gloves; cheap modular housing for students and some hairy products. That’s the bait that is thrown at the Sharks in this week’s edition of Shark Tank South Africa, the highly-entertaining new M-Net and Telkom SA reality show in which five business tycoons evaluate pitches from budding entrepreneurs. If they find the pitch to be an investable prospect they then dive deep into their own pockets to back the new enterprises financially.

The Sharks are hungry to bite – especially bean counter extraordinaire Marnus Broodryk who has not managed to clinch a deal to date – but the fish in the tank seem to be swimming in all directions with crazy ideas. Is there perhaps a lot of money to be made if one could streamline these plans? Or are they dealing with duds that will go nowhere?

While weighing up his options, Shark Marnus decides to have some fun in the tank this week. Unfortunately, some of his colleagues, which include marketing expert Gil Oved, tech guru Vinny Lingham, media mogul Romeo Kumalo and level-headed business woman Dawn Nathan-Jones, are showing more teeth than ever before.

In between all of the harsh commentary, this episode will provide plenty of excellent tips for business owners who want to find out how to market and upscale their businesses. One of the entrepreneurs this week is a master of branding and another one urgently needs advice on proper distrubition.

To find out more about the businesses, especially if you’re interested in supporting them with an order or purchase, go to or follow the conversation about the show on Twitter @MNetSharkTank with the hashtag #SharkTankSA.

Whistleblowers are guardians of our democracy, acting selflessly to expose corruption, self-enrichment and wrongdoing. Thanks to the bravery of these men and women, several cases have been blown wide open in recent years, ranging from bread price fixing and text book fraud, to supply chain corruption and collusion in the construction industry. But, while they may be revealing the truth, many suffer dire persecution, untold harassment and even death. Could new legislation now finally make it safer to disclose the truth? Guptas: Road to Exit

South Africa is in a precarious position. Is South Africa facing a tipping point? Carte Blanche brings key insight through exposés and investigations conducted over the years.

The Gupta Billions

Early in 2016, it was revealed that the Hawks were investigating Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. On Tuesday last week the NPA charged him with fraud. This catalysed a monumental support campaign by civil and political society opposed to so-called moves to hijack the National Treasury. In a strategic move Gordhan has this week exposed R6.8-billion worth of allegedly suspicious Gupta-linked transactions. Carte Blanche brings analysis to the fray.

Smart Entrepreneurs With Crazy Ideas Step Into The Shark Tank

The five Sharks in M-Net and Telkom SA’s s new Sunday night reality show Shark Tank South Africa are hungry for business deals, but they are extremely finicky about the items on the menu. To date, only two of the Sharks – marketing guru Gil Oved and tech mogul Vinny Lingham – have delved into their own pockets to support entrepreneurs who stepped into the tank. Will their fellow Sharks Marnus Broodryk, Dawn Nathan-Jones and Romeo Kumalo follow suit this week Sunday at 18:00?

During the first two episodes the Sharks made it clear that they were looking for budding entrepreneurs who know their numbers, can upscale their ideas and deliver a return on their investments in the near future. Passion and the drive to succeed also played a significant role when Gil and Vinny decided to partner with Vusi Ravele and Sarah Jeffreys respectively. It also helped that the Sharks loved their products! Vusi’s business is built on a unique line of home and décor items, while Sarah is the brain behind comfy, good-looking rocking chairs for mothers with babies.

This week, the Sharks encounter some smart entrepreneurs with crazy yet functional products. An experienced marketer has a revolutionary plan that will minimise chaos at cemeteries. Then there’s a savvy lady who believes that the millions of birthdays celebrated every month will make the Sharks loads of money and a guy whose app might be the solution to many parents’ biggest headache: kids struggling with maths. And, what will happen when the Sharks are thrown biltong as bait? Some of them just happen to be vegetarians!

To see how the action unfolds in this week’s Shark Tank South Africa, tune into M-Net 101 on Sunday night at 18:00. Also note that this is the Sunday night timeslot during which all DStv customers can get a taste of what’s available on M-Net 101, so if you’re not a DStv Premium customer, you can also go to channel 101 to watch Shark Tank SA. The series will also be available on DStv Catch Up and will be streamed live on DStv Now.
