MultiChoice Tanzania Celebrates 20 Years Of Changing Lives

The celebration will involve a two days special exhibition set to take place at the Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam

MultiChoice Tanzania (MCT) (www.DStv.com) the country’s first Pay TV Company has reached an exiting milestone as the company celebrates 20 years of changing lives through innovative delivery of ground-breaking content. The celebration will involve a two days special exhibition set to take place at the Mlimani City in Dar es Salaam where the public will get to witness first-hand MultiChoice Tanzania’s journey.

MultiChoice recognised the need for multi content for varied consumer needs when it commenced its operations in Dar es Salaam in July 1997 providing Tanzanians the Pay TV service, DStv, at a time when conventional TV services was a novel.

The company’s spirit to deliver revolutionary content in entertainment and education remain the same to date when it has grown considerably with 5 regional offices across the country with significant investment in infrastructure, technology and human resource.

Initially DStv started with only 3 channels being SuperSport, M-Net and Movie Magic and today DStv boasts of over 100 TV and radio channels in various packages (DStv Premium, Compact, Compact Plus, Family and Bomba) allowing customers flexibility in pricing and choice.

Multichoice Tanzania Shareholder and Board Chair Ambassador Ami Mpungwe reflected on the company’s 20th anniversary by saying “MultiChoice Tanzania has been a champion in offering world-class entertainment to Tanzanians. We started our services in this market when the TV business was at its infantry and has through the years become a part and parcel of the vast transformation in the TV industry in the country”.

“We pride ourselves for being a part of the lives of Tanzanians, assuring not only quality services but offering reasons for families and friends to come together, share dear moments and creating cherished memoirs” said Ambassador Mpungwe.

While marking its 20th Anniversary, MultiChoice Tanzania has impacted the lives of millions of Tanzanians creating employment for over 100 staff working directly at the company, over 1,000 independent DStv installers and over 500 Direct Sales (alias foot-solders) across the country creating wellbeing for themselves and their families.

“Thanks to our dedicated leadership team, employees and partners, we have experienced a steady growth and continue to thrive” further stated Ambassador Mpungwe. “Of recent we have been recording remarkable growth in subscriber base despite increasing competition. This shows how the team is well geared to innovatively compete in this stiff market” affirmed the Ambassador.

MultiChoice Tanzania has enjoyed being a good corporate citizen through social investments in sports sponsorships; like the recent gold medal win by DStv Ambassador Alphonce Simbu during the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon earlier this year and again the Bronze Medal later in the year at the World Championships. Orphanages support: centres like Al Madinnah in the outskirt of Dar es Salaam have benefitted from over 5 years of support including the recent launch of a tailoring project that will enable the centre to generate income sustainably.

As a leading entertainment brand, MultiChoice Tanzania continues to put customers first by listening and responding to evolving needs. The introduction of a tailor-made Tanzanian Channel – Maisha Magic Bongo (MMB) has significantly aided in recruiting a huge number of new customers making MMB the leading channel in Tanzania and the most preferred channel of many across the country.

Through MMB, dozens of local studios, film directors, producers and hundreds of actors and actresses are benefiting by the airing of their productions. A significant amount of money continues to be invested in local productions, giving the local film industry the biggest boost since time immemorial.

MultiChoice Tanzania’s 20th Anniversary marks a time of change for the organisation as it reshapes the business to stay ahead of the curve in delivering latest and greatest local and international content. “I am delighted to report that our business is solid and that we are looking forward to an even brighter future as we remain motivated to shape the next 20 years of content delivery through innovative and cutting edge technology that lets you watch whatever, whenever, wherever!” Concluded Ambassador Mpungwe.

M-Net and MultiChoice create the movie experience of a lifetime:

Count down 100 movies to see before you die with the M-Net Movies Bucket List pop-up channel

What is your absolute favourite film of all time? The one that opened your eyes, tugged at your heartstrings and made your soul leap with joy? Were you were born in the golden age of cinema? Is there a stack of fantastic features your like-minded friends and family have been raving about, which you’re sad to admit you haven’t seen YET?  You now have the opportunity to tick off all the films you still need to watch  – or enjoy again – before it’s time to kick the bucket!

M-Net and MultiChoice have created yet another exciting movies pop-up channel as a special treat to DStv Premium customers. Between Monday, 30 October and 2 December the M-Net Movies Bucket List pop-up channel will count down 100 popular and iconic Hollywood movies to see before you die.

This selection of fine films and all-time favourites will be showcased on DStv’s channel 109 with the first of the 100 movies scheduled for just after 18:00 on Monday, 30 October. Thereafter, the countdown will continue all the way to the number 1 main attraction on Saturday, 2 December at 20:30. Depending on the duration and age-restrictions of these films, the daily countdown will kick off on weekdays at approximately 18:00 and on weekends just before or after 16:00.

To receive the nod for the coveted M-Net Movies Bucket List, compiled by an expert team of film fanatics, a movie had to be entrenched in popular culture, define an era, shift mediums, uproot the status quo, delight a variety of audiences, impress critics worldwide and be able to reignite your love for movies.

“Our themed pop-up channels such as the Star Wars, Harry Potter, BlackOut, Fast and Furious and James Bond channels have been huge hits and we promised to continue curating unique experiences for our M-Net Movies audiences,” says Jan du Plessis, Director: M-Net Channels. “With the M-Net Movie Bucket List we’re taking the pop-up concept to the next level. Never before have viewers been able to see so many magnificent game-changing movies in one place over such a short time.”

While M-Net Movies will share the titles from #100 to #11 on its programming schedules, the Top 10 films on the list will remain top secret. This means that the final films on the M-Net Movies Bucket List will only be revealed to DStv customers on the day of the screening, so you will have to be sure to tune in to channel 109 on the day that they air.

“Keeping hush about these titles just adds to the excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime movie compilation,” Du Plessis says. “We all have our own bucket lists based on our own taste and we believe it will be great fun for movie fans to compare notes and see whether their favourites have made it onto the pop-up channel.”

On top of the 100 must-see-movies-before-you-die-modern-day motion pictures, M-Net Movies will also fuel film fandom with the M-Net Movies Bucket List Bonus Features, as well as a fabulous viewers competition. To win big in the M-Net Bucket List viewer’s competition you have to curate your own the Top 10 movie list at mnet.tv/bucketlist. The competition closes on 30 November before the Top 10 hits your screens.

The M-Net Movies Bucket List Bonus Features will comprise additional classics which can’t be ignored but which will appeal to niche audiences. Among these titles are vintage silver screen darlings that were ground-breaking at their time, like Mary Poppins, Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The M-Net Movies Bucket List schedule (prior to the Top 10) will be published at www.mnet.tv you can also consult the EPG (Electronic Programming Guide) or catch up on the films you’ve missed on DStv Catch Up Plus.

Make Your Home The Place To Be This Holiday With DStv

MultiChoice is opening up the Premium kiddies’ channels to its Compact customers from Thursday, 29 June until Thursday, 13 July, just in time for the school holidays. DStv Compact customers will get a first view of the Premium kids channels, namely Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Nick Jnr.

“Kids will not have a single reason to complain of boredom this winter holiday. School’s out, so little ones can have friends over, snuggle up and get cosy with DStv and the selection of great content available on these Premium channels. The winter season also gives families the perfect opportunity to stay warm indoors and spend quality time with loved ones while enjoying this special treat,” says Aletta Alberts, MultiChoice Head of Content.

Disney’s classic cartoons, popular animated characters, live action sitcoms and unrivalled range of classic Disney feature films will keep the whole family entertained; while Nickelodeon’s “Kids First” focus with their signature fun and exciting shows will be enjoyed by pre-schoolers, tweens, kids, teens and parents alike.

Nick Jr. is the go-to channel in households where two to six year olds roam. The content is entertaining enough to keep young children occupied, while parents can rest assured that the viewing experience will be one of learning.

Some of the highlights for DStv Compact customers

For three weeks in July, Nickelodeon (DStv channel 305) is offering weekday marathons packed with special episodes and a brand new series! Let the kids fly away with superheroes The Thundermans and Henry Danger, get technical with the internet gurus and gamers from Game Shakers and iCarly, go on a family adventure in Hunter Street and Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, and laugh out loud with animated series, The Loud House and Bunsen Is a Beast. Plus, check out the new addition, ToonMarty.

A great big dollop of comedy and a generous pinch of slapstick make Nickelodeon’s new animated series an entertaining hit. Marty is a wacky boy with quite a large head, who works at the Toonmart in Toonville with his friends Burnie and Holly. And there’s no business Marty likes better than somebody else’s business, which often lands the trio in hot water! Watch as they clean up their mess after their pranks go wrong. ToonMarty will premiere on Monday, 5 July.

Nick Jr.’s (DStv channel 307) new episodes of Nella The Princess Knight air daily from Saturday, 1 July. In this season, Nella uses her position as a princess-knight to be a guardian for justice – when she’s not practising for her ballet recital or playing with Trinket, her unicorn best friend! In the new episodes, the girls are excited because there’s a celebrity visiting Castlehaven. Trinket has to overcome her jealousy of Nella’s new friendship with Minotauri and a near-sighted cyclops interrupts Nella’s ballet class.

Team Umizoomi: The King of Numbers is a movie where preschoolers are tested on their basic counting and recognition of shapes and patterns. In this special, the siblings Milli and Geo, and their green robot friend Bot, have to use all their maths skills to save a king.

On Disney Channel (DStv Channel 303), inventor and mediator Harley Diaz manoeuvers through the bustle that results from being part of a big happy family, from the unique vantage point of being a tween middle child. Join her for a whole new host of adventures in the premiere of Stuck in the Middle Yr2 on Monday, 3 July at 17:05, launching with the special Stuck in the Waterpark!

You can also catch familiar favourites like Elena of Avalor – a magical tale of adventure, following Elena in her journey to become a brave, resilient and compassionate queen; Bizaardvark, where Frankie and Paige, the quirky, 13-year-old best friends write funny songs and create music videos for their online channel, Bizaardvark; and Girl Meets World where life’s an adventure, and Riley Matthews’ is about to begin! This bright-eyed 7th grader and her quick-witted BFF, Maya, navigate the ups and downs of teenage life and take on the world, just as Riley’s parents once did; and so much more.

The channels will automatically be added, but if you can’t find it, make sure you are on all channels not favourite channels.

DStv Premium, Extra and Compact customers can also catch the best kids’ entertainment on-the-go on DStv Catch Up or through live streaming on DStv Now.

But having fun with Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. doesn’t have to end when the school holidays do. Upgrade to DStv Premium by checking out www.dstv.com and keep the entertainment going!
