SAMDB had the priviledge of attending a preview screening of Lobola recently.
The film is a heart-warming look at cross cultural romance, and the difficulties that need to be overcome through such a union. It also highlights how far we, as South Africans, have come on our path towards colourblindness.
The music narrates the screen story, being responsible for some of the many laughs throughout.
Although the subject matter is heavy, innuendos and racial jokes are extremely well timed. Each side has it’s dig, and allows us all to have a good laugh at ourselves.
The leads were well cast, their acting superb, all the way holding the audience captive with their on-screen chemistry.
This film not only makes one look at one’s self, but highlights that anything can be overcome if your heart is in it, and you put your mind to it.
It’s refreshing to see that the South African movies of late can now be held to the same high standards and regard as the international blockbusters we are all so addicted to.
Lobola, a true South African film, that will appeal to everyone!
