Romeo & Juliet (DVD): Review

The Film

Romeo & Juliet, one of the most told stories, with countless stage plays and movies telling the story of the star crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet secretly wed, despite the ongoing feud between their two families, the Montagues and the Capulets.

Soon, fateful events ensue, leading to death, and changing their families forever.

Douglas Booth (Noah) plays Romeo, and Hailee Steinfeld (Enders Game, 3 Days To Kill) plays Juliet in this incarnation. There is not much to say about the story we all know, except that there are a few slight interpretative changes, nothing big, but are a new take on some scenes. Casting is an interesting choice, as it feels as if they two lead characters are somewhat less important than some of the supporting characters. Damian Lewis is ideal as Lord Capulet, revelling in the role, and making his scenes thoroughly enjoyable.

Disc And Bonus Features

The disc, as nearly all commercial discs, is encoded at a high bitrate, meaning it can be scaled up in software for a high definition screen, without any visible artefacts. Sound makes use of the surrounds in your theatre system, adding to the soundstage of a scene, with mostly atmospheric audio. There are no bonus features on this disc.

Romeo & Juliet is available now, for purchase, in South Africa.
