SONA 2017

With security tight around Parliament this week, President Jacob Zuma’s 8th State of the Nation Address gives South Africans a much anticipated road map into 2017. Carte Blanche asks: is the President’s take on simmering hot-button issues from land redistribution to trade policies, free higher education, the scourge of corruption and more, sufficient to restore confidence and economic growth?

Cape Water Crisis

The Western Cape has been hit by a crippling drought and dam levels have dropped to below 40 percent, of which less than 30 percent is usable. Unless heavy rains fall soon, the city could face a massive water crisis which can only be averted if citizens adhere to strict, never-before implemented, level 3B water restrictions. But how is it possible that, a mere 90-minute drive from Cape Town in the coastal town of Hermanus, no water restrictions are needed? Carte Blanche asks: could the solution lurk deep underground?

Age is Just a Number

The first time Deirdre Larkin laced up to go for a run back in 2009 she managed only a few steps. Despite a lifetime of inactivity and being a 78-year osteoporosis sufferer, her determination paid off. Now, at 85, she’s run countless races and has just broken a world record by a whopping 20 minutes! How does 97-year-old Charles Eugsters keep his fit and lean body looking like that of a man half his age? Carte Blanche meets old people with bodies that defy their chronological age. What is their secret to longevity?

Producer: Kate Barry
Presenter: Derek Watts

Joost: A Carte Blanche Tribute

He’s known as a ferocious competitor on the field, a courageous leader and arguably one of the finest scrum-halves ever to wear the number nine jersey. Joost van der Westhuizen, one of South Africa’s favourite rugby heroes represented the country in 89 test matches, scoring 38 tries and playing a crucial role in the Springbok squad’s iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup win. This week, after a brave six-year battle with Motor Neuron Disease, Joost passed away. Carte Blanche pays tribute to a legend.
