After its rapturous response at this year’s Encounters South African International Documentary Festival in June, Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau brings the acclaimed documentary: The Fall to their screens. Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau is home to exclusive and authentic content that evokes emotions and takes consumers on a journey. In a new partnership with Encounters, South Africa’s leading creative documentary festival, Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau will bring the very best of local and international documentary film to the big screen.

Keeping in line with this mandate, this striking documentary depicting the lives of world renowned athletes, Zola Budd and Mary Decker, The Fall, will be screened ONLY at Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau theatres from 09 December 2017.

With exclusive signed access to Zola Budd and Mary Decker, as well as a wide cast of people who have never revealed their story before, this multi-layered epic narrative interweaves unique testimonial interview with rich significant archive, anchoring each point of the journey in its social and political context.

This is the story of a world record breaking South African bare foot runner, an American track-and-field child prodigy and the events that led to one of the most memorable moments in sporting history at the 1984 L.A. Olympics. It’s the story that we all thought we knew – but in this exclusive documentary we uncover a tale of race, exploitation, broken families and childhood dreams; of the blurred lines between politics, media and sport; and of a battle for validation.

Set within the apartheid era and during a sporting boycott of South Africa, this film exposes the calculated ‘back room’ tactics used by British Newspaper, ‘The Daily Mail’ and British Government ministers to groom a naïve seventeen year old to run for Britain at the 1984 Olympics; and the dedication, commitment and sacrifice required to compete at the highest level.

With the world captivated by the stories of the two runners and the media revelling in the hype of an Olympic ‘duel’, the world watched as both women approached the starting blocks. But no one could have ever predicted just how dramatic the concluding headline would be.

In a final twist to the film, 32 years on – and as the world revels in 2016 Olympic fever – Zola Budd and Mary Decker will be reunited back at the L.A. Coliseum. Watching the race for the first time since that day, they will finally reveal for the first time just whose fault they believe the collision was.
