Megan Leavey : Review

Based on the true life story Marine corporal Megan Leavey (Kate Mara – Morgan, The Martian), who forms a strong and unique bond with her military combat dog Rex, leading to the two saving countless lives while deployed in Iraq.

The film follows Megan’s journey from her decision to join the Marines, her training, deployment, and the aftermath of war and the toll it takes on relationships, both family and with Rex.

Megan Leavey, the film find just the right balance between telling a war story, and telling the biographical drama story of Corporal Leavey’s life. While the story is sure to evoke plenty emotion, and tug on many a heart string, it does not dwell or push this aspect. This is a to-the-point telling of a courageous pair, and the love that bound them together in such a strong bond.

For those who have, or had, a canine companion as part of their family, the understanding is likely to be that much stronger, as both Megan and Rex undergo the effects of war. But, the war aspect of the film plays out in a stark retelling of the a pivotal incident for the warrior pair, instead of the usual over the top explosions and effects.

As a film, Megan Leavey is put together really well, with a talented cast who are just right for their roles and characters. The story is well rounded, eschewing politics and debate, and devoid of an over complex plot.

Emotion, drama, a great story, and an enjoyable movie, Megan Leavey is a war film to see this year.

Megan Leavey opens 19 January 2018 in South African cinemas.
