Prime Psychological Horror “Hereditary” Entering Cinemas This Weekend

“Don’t say you weren’t warned…” The time has finally come for the much talked-about and critically acclaimed horror film, HEREDITARY, to reach our shores – this highly-anticipated box office hit starts showing at South African cinemas nationwide from this Friday, 15 June 2018.

The film opened in the US this past weekend with a gross box office of over $13 million – a phenomenal achievement for an independently-produced and hard-hitting horror film from a first-time filmmaker, competing with mainstream blockbusters for screen space.

Making his feature debut, writer-director Ari Aster unleashes a nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown that exhibits the craft and precision of a nascent auteur, transforming a familial tragedy into something ominous and deeply disquieting, and pushing the horror movie into chilling new terrain with its shattering portrait of heritage gone to hell.

HEREDITARY has sustained a steady average of over 90% Fresh on international review-aggregator portal Rotten Tomatoes. The majority of critical consensus is that this is a must-see film which takes the horror genre to superlative new heights for the 21st Century, albeit unsettling and potentially disturbing for sensitive viewers.

The film’s lead, Toni Collette, has been singled out for her “performance of a lifetime” – with strong talk of guaranteed accolades, such as the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Apart from critical acclaim, HEREDITARY continues to draw overly positive reactions from horror fans and younger moviegoers – meaning that this title has crossed the often-prevalent divide between critical- and commercial success. Everyone is talking about the film’s lingering effect long after the credits have rolled.
