The true story of serial killer Mary Ann Cotton (Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt), a 19th-century British woman who escaped life as a coal miner’s wife by hitting upon a seemingly infallible scheme: taking out modest life insurance policies on her intended victims and then poisoning them with arsenic, which was difficult to detect at the time. Inspired by the life of former Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, The Bold Type is about three friends working at a fictional women’s magazine.
