A few weeks ago, singer-songwriter Claire Hopkins dazzled local audiences with the release of her first original single, KEEPER.
It is a very personal country/pop song that was inspired by how she met her boyfriend, Stuart and tells the story of just knowing on the first date that it is meant to be.
Now she is back in the spotlight with the release of the single’s jolly and witty music video with a twist. “The music video is not what one might expect,” admits Claire. “Instead of literally interpreting the single, the video turns it on its head – it infers that while I see Stuart as a keeper, he doesn’t feel the same and thinks I am crazy. What ensues is an arranged ‘ratchet’ wedding. The groom is kidnapped by the bridesmaids and brought to the ceremony, where I essentially ‘force’ him to participate in the festivities.”
The idea for the video was conceptualised by director Tylo Ribeiro from Inkglas, with some input from Claire. “I wanted the video to be fun, unique and unexpected. I didn’t want to repeat the concepts typically associated with love songs. I wanted to create something that would be both memorable, light-hearted and reflective of my sense of humour.”
KEEPER is the young artist’s third single – she also released covers of Drunk in May and Undo It in July this year. Her second original track is currently in production.
Claire was born in Durban and moved to Johannesburg with her family when she was four. Growing up, she was passionate about music and performance and joined a vocal studio when she was in high school. She recorded her first cover, Adele’s Someone Like You, at the age of seventeen.
She is currently busy completing her psychology training and studies (Internship) and is equally passionate about music and her career.
Although she does not like planning too far in advance, this talented musician wants to use her music to spread joy, hope and positivity and if her latest release is anything to go by, she is well on her way to achieving this goal.

Skaars ’n paar weke gelede het die sanger en liedjieskrywer, Claire Hopkins, gehore in vervoering gehad met die vrystelling van haar eerste oorspronklike enkelsnit, KEEPER.
Dit is ’n baie persoonlike country-/ popsnit wat geïnspireer is deur hoe sy en haar kêrel, Stuart, ontmoet het en daaroor gaan om dadelik te weet dat julle vir mekaar bedoel is.
Nou is sy terug in die kollig met die vrystelling van hierdie snit se unieke en plesierige musiekvideo. “Dit is eintlik glad nie wat ’n mens verwag nie,” erken Claire. “In plaas daarvan om die liedjie letterlik te interpreteer, het ons ’n kinkel in die kabel beplan. Alhoewel ek mal is oor Stuart in die video, voel hy nie dieselfde nie. Daarna volg ’n “gereëlde troue” waar die bruidegom deur die strooimeisie ontvoer word na die seremonie en letterlik deur die bruid ‘gedwing’ word om deel te neem aan die feestelikhede.”
Die idee vir die video is gekonsepsualiseer deur die regisseur, Tylo Ribeiro, van Inkglas met Claire se insae. “Ek wou hê dat die video pret, uniek en onvoorspelbaar moes wees. Ons wou nie konsepte herhaal wat gewoonlik met liefdesliedjies geassosieer word nie. Dit moes iets onvergeetlik wees, wat my sin vir humor weergee.”
KEEPER is dié jong kunstenaar se derde vrystelling – sy het ook vroeër vanjaar weergawes van Drunk en Undo It uitgereik. Haar tweede oorspronklike snit word reeds vervaardig.
Claire is in Durban gebore en het saam met haar gesin na Johannesburg verhuis toe sy vier was. Sy was haar hele lewe lank passievol oor musiek en het reeds op hoërskool professionele sanglesse ontvang. Op sewentien, het sy haar weergawe van Adele se Someone Like You professioneel laat opneem.
Tans is sy besig om haar sielkunde-opleiding en -studies (internskap) te voltooi en erken sy dat sy ewe passievol is oor haar loopbaankeuse en musiek.
Alhoewel sy nie daarvan hou om te ver vooruit te beplan nie, wil dié talentvolle musikant haar musiek gebruik om vreugde, hoop en positiwiteit te versprei. As haar nuutste vrystelling enigsins ’n voorbeeld is van wat sy beplan, gaan sy beslis hierdie doelwit bereik.
