An optometrist who sings. Yes, why not? Making a difference in the lives of everyone he meets has always been the attractive 29-year-old optometrist from Centurion, Tiaan Massyn’s, biggest goal in life.
As someone who owns and runs two successful practices in Pretoria (Rooihuiskraal and Eldoraigne), gets too little sleep and stresses too much, he finds balance in the joy of writing and creating music.
This people-person has a close bond with his family and admits that he has no experience in the music industry. “I am completely out of my comfort zone, but am determined to broaden my horizons,” he says.
Two years ago, he started taking singing lessons with well-known vocal coach Jolanda Becker. “The last time I sang before that, was in grade 6!,” he jokes.
But when you listen to his debut single, which has just been released, you’ll hear a young man with an incredible voice who sings with passion! Yes, this optometrist can sing!
He wrote DIE SON KOM OP (The Sun Rises) one evening over a good bottle of wine with his brother-in-law, Ernes Smit (a CA who loves poetry) and then gave it to producer, Jattie de Beer from Artistry Productions to work his magic.
The song touches your heart, because when you listen to it, you realize that this man has experienced, seen, and dealt with so many challenges during Covid. Yet, he maintains his positive outlook on life and believes that you should seize every opportunity, live life to the fullest, explore the world, and make music!
“I wanted to write a song that South Africans could identify with and listen to when life’s challenges get them down,” says Tiaan.
He explains that the direct impact that Covid 19 has had on his own life and the lives of his loved ones, as well as the people he encounters through his work as an optometrist, hit him right between the eyes.
“It was really heart-breaking to hear about the obstacles they had to face every day because they were unemployed and had to stay strong for those around them. I wanted to create hope for these people; something they could identify with and listen to.”
Massyn impresses with a powerful combination of meaningful lyrics and a unique melody, and the end result will resonate with audiences of all ages.
In addition to a music video for the single, which will be released soon, he is excited about the future and is working on few promising projects that he doesn’t want to reveal too much about at this stage.
“To be able to see is the greatest gift from God and I can make a difference in someone’s life every day. Look, the sun is rising!,” he concludes.
