Valentine’s or Galentine’s? Here’s a Series of Shows That May Tickle Your Fancy on Netflix

Whether you’re cuddling up with your significant other or having a fabulous night in with friends, Netflix has something for everyone this February

It’s romcoms galore with Netflix this love month. While we are eagerly waiting in anticipation for our new homegrown romcom film, A Soweto Love Story, we have some more great titles to keep you entertained. Though most of these light-hearted, humorous plot lines may be centered on romantic situationships (read hardships), you’re guaranteed to always get a fairy-tale-style happy ending. Here are some must-watch picks:

Seriously Single: The story of a serial monogamist who seeks for love and marriage

Follow the adventures and heartaches of Dineo (Fulu Mugovhani) a fiercely independent woman navigating love and life in Johannesburg. As she navigates the highs and lows of modern dating, she leans on her loyal and commitment-phobic best friend, Noni (Tumi Morake) for support. Together, they embark on a hilarious and heartwarming exploration of empowerment, self-love, and personal growth. With plenty of giggles and emotion, this South African romcom also features Bohang Moeko, DJ Fresh and Yonda Thomas. It isproduced by Burnt Onion – the production team behind How To Ruin Christmas.

Trippin’ with the Kandasamys: A captivating portrayal of the joys and challenges of modern family life

It’s never a dull moment in the vibrant Kandasamy household – a boisterous and dynamic family navigating through life’s ups and downs with flair and laughter. Amidst the chaos the film also delves into deeper themes of family dynamics, cultural identity, and the bonds that tie us together. With their eccentricities, quirks, and endless voyages, the Kanadasaymy’s offer a unique blend of wit, love, and familial bonds that keep audiences hooked episode after episode.

Trippin’ with the Kandasamys is produced by Urban Vision Productions, starring actres Jailoshini Naidoo, Maeshni Naicker, and Mariam Bassa.

Yoh! Christmas: A grapple of societal expectations of marriage and children

This delightful holiday romcom by BBZEE Productions offers a fresh twist to the pressure of having a partner. The story revolves around Thando (Katlego Lebogang), a single, 30-year-old woman under pressure from her family. To avoid the usual questioning about her love life during the holidays, Thando lies about having a boyfriend. Now, she has 24 days to find someone to bring home for Christmas.

In between, Thando recounts her past heartbreak and lingering feelings for her ex,  whose actions continue to affect her despite his new life. With pressure from her mother and her own impulsive announcement, she sets out to find a fake boyfriend for Christmas dinner. Overlooking her close friend Charles (Siya Sepotokele) and new acquaintance Ben (Anthony Oseyemi), she embarks on a quest. As her journey unfolds, will she stumble upon a potential new romance? Watch to find out.

Happiness Ever After: A tale of sisterhood, love and self-discovery

Explore the life of Zaza (Khanyi Mbau), Princess (Renate Stuurman) and Zimkitha (Nambitha Ben-Mazwi) who embrace new chapters of their lives amongst loss, family grudges and new love.

As the characters’ paths intertwine and intersect, they discover that true happiness lies not in the pursuit of external validation or material wealth, but rather in the simple pleasures of love, friendship, and authenticity. Through acts of kindness, moments of vulnerability, and the power of human connection, they find solace in the realization that happiness is not found in the grand gestures, but in  everyday moments.

No matter how you’re celebrating Valentine’s or Galentine’s this year, Netflix has the perfect lineup of titles to make your February extra special. What are you waiting for? Grab some popcorn, snuggle up with your loved ones and enjoy a series of good movies.
