MultiChoice’s latest addition to the canon of Nollywood films for Africa Magic, My Fairytale Wedding, comes on the back of the channel’s 20th anniversary in 2023.
Launched as a single channel showing mainly Nollywood movies in 2003, Africa Magic has expanded its content and cultural impact to seven channels featuring movies, sitcoms, soap operas, telenovelas, music, reality and magazine shows in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and English languages, delivering quality content by Nigerians, for Nigerians.
Original Africa Magic feature, My Fairytale Wedding, delivers love, laughter and a sprinkle of magic. The romantic comedy-drama offers a refreshing reimagining of classic fairy tales, infused with African heart and soul and set against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos, Nigeria.
Mojisola (MJ) is a 29-year-old woman who, in a desperate bid to find love, turns to the mystical power of ‘kayanmata’ – effectively a ‘love-enhancing potion’ – through a flamboyant seller, Madame Fantasia. What starts as a dream quickly spirals into a whirlwind of hilarious happenings with outrageous consequences, proving that magic doesn’t always deliver a fairytale ending.
My Fairytale Wedding is a cinematic journey that dives deep into the complexities of modern relationships, the power of sisterhood and the timeless search for true love. This film is the first in a planned trilogy, with each instalment focusing on the lives of three women – MJ, Tima, and Precious – each navigating unique challenges in their personal quest for happiness.
“In conceptualizing and producing My Fairytale Wedding, we wanted to bring something fresh and authentic to the screen – something that resonates deeply with our audience while offering a fun and lighthearted take on the challenges of love in the 21st century,” says Executive Head: Content and Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, Busola Tejumola. “By blending modern realities with a touch of magical realism, we’ve created a story that’s both relatable and enchanting – all while staying true to our African roots.”
The film is predominantly English-language, but mixes in vibrant indigenous Nigerian languages and pidgin English, adding to its authenticity and cultural richness. The characters, led by the charming MJ, reflect the diverse experiences of African women today, making the film a celebration of life, love, and the bonds that hold us together.
