Coming Up On Carte Blanche – 11 January 2026

“It says much about where we find ourselves politically that some among us look back on elements of the apartheid ecosystem with nostalgia.  Bophuthatswana was a construct of a divisive and abusive system and yet, for many who lived and worked there, its current state is indicative of the impact of the ANC’s shortsightedness.  It’s an uncomfortable conversation thrust into the public domain by social media.  Are we ready for it?” – John Webb, Executive Producer

Politics of the Past

Three decades into democracy, a controversial sentiment is emerging in the ruins of the former Bophuthatswana. It was an apartheid homeland designed to segregate, ruled by an oppressive regime. Today, North West province is littered with its crumbling remains. For some, the new South Africa’s failures fuel nostalgia for order, employment, and functioning infrastructure. Others remember only torture, censorship, and apartheid collaboration. Is disillusionment with the present rehabilitating a brutal past? Or was life better in Bophuthatswana?

Bribe for a Pillow

A con featuring five-star views, “lucky packets” and luxury sheets. In the Western Cape, a businessman is allegedly swindling property owners out of a small fortune in accommodation for contractors seconded to Koeberg Power Station. And that’s not all: he allegedly bribes contractors to choose his accommodation services over other suppliers. Contractors make a killing to lay their heads on a pillow, while property owners are left in the red. Carte Blanche investigates.

Transport Angels

On Cape Town’s map, ambulances draw a line dictated by crime and fear. Beyond that boundary, in the most underserved corners of the Cape Flats, children battling life-limiting illnesses struggle to reach essential care. But two men are bringing hope – in a van. They’ve covered over 38 000 kilometres and ferried thousands of young patients to hospital and safely home. But they’re so much more than drivers: they’re friends, counsellors, an anchor for overwhelmed parents and frightened children. This is a story of grief and tragedy transformed into pure, courageous empathy. It’s a journey of dignity and hope forged on our most dangerous roads.

Producer: Sinethemba Nogude | Presenter: Govan Whittles
