Disaster in Nepal
Last week, high in the Himalayan Mountains, part of a glacier collapsed, unleashing a wall of water, mud and debris that destroyed bridges, roads and hydropower projects. The death toll is at nearly 1,000, with thousands more reported missing – among them, six South Africans. As emergency responders are deployed to hunt for victims, Gift of the Givers prepares to join the efforts. We track their preparations, speak to families desperate for news of their loved ones, and hear the warning from climate experts: this disaster is a sign of things to come.

For generations, a war has raged over territory, drugs, and power. Decades of poverty and segregation have entrenched gang violence on the Cape Flats. Gangs offer belonging and income – but ongoing turf wars hold surrounding communities hostage. Five months ago, national government deployed the army to help combat gang violence. But has anything changed on the ground? Carte Blanche accompanies a parliamentary oversight visit, speaks to crime-fighting organisations, and hears from gang members to examine whether the state is making progress in dismantling the gangs that continue to terrorise Cape Town.
