DStv Honours Our Diversity… And Similarities

September is Heritage Month and we’re celebrating this special time by releasing a fascinating, South African-produced documentary on M-Net City and DStv Catch Up.

Entitled So Where Do I Come From, the show centres around DNA and gene mapping – technologies that reveal some incredible truths about people and our shared history. In the words of geneticist, and associate producer of the show, Dr Himla Soodyall: “We can change our language, culture or place of abode in the space of a generation, but our genes will always remain an indelible record of our ancestral past.”

While South Africa is a country renowned for rightly celebrating its diversity, there is also a lot that we have in common “Thanks to this documentary,” says Yolisa Pahle, CEO for General Entertainment at MultiChoice, “understanding the things that we have in common should unite us without taking away from the power of our diversity.  So Where Do I come from is the  story of the fundamental building blocks of life – our DNA.”

And there’s no escaping the truth of our past, as gene mapping reaches back into the annals of time; going back an astonishing 170 000 years! So Where Do I Come From tested the DNA of several well-known South Africans – such as former President, Nelson Mandela – and the results were astonishing.

Don’t forget to tune into this riveting documentary on Heritage Day, Monday, 24 September at 3pm on M-Net City or watch it on Catch Up on your decoder or DStv Now from 24 September, or on Catch Up Plus on your internet-connected DStv Explora. DStv Premium, Compact Plus and Compact customers will be able to watch this unique documentary.

DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards Nominees Announced

Grit, Blood, Sweat and Tears!!! Are elements that our nominees recognise and what they’ve endured to get to where they are in their craft. Mzansi Magic brings the second chapter of the award ceremony that aims to acknowledge and celebrate  homegrown talent in various entertainment streams.

At the DSTV Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards (DMVCA) launch event held at Summer Place in Hyde Park, the Gqom sensation, Destruction Boyz, and their smash hit, Omunye the dynamic Durban duo commanded the spotlight. They also lead the nominees list with an impressive three nods; for Song of the Year, Favourite Rising Star and Favourite Music Artist/Group. It looks like they were right on the money when naming their breakout album Gqom is the Future!

Nipping close at the heels with two nominations each are Prince Kaybee and Kagiso Rabada. The house music master and Proteas fast bowler have been making waves and raking in the silverware respectively – most definitely #livingourbestlife in 2018!

Prince Kaybee is nominated in the Song of the Year and Favourite DJ categories, while Rabada appears in the Favourite Sports Personality of the Year and Favourite Personality of the Year lists.

Rabada will have to beat stiff competition from media darling Bonang Matheba, crowd favourite Papa Penny Ahee, Mzansi sweetheart Nomzamo Mbatha and the flamboyant reality TV star Somizi Mhlongo.

“ The DStv MVCA launched in 2017 to great fanfare,” said Reneilwe Sema, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net. “The calibre of nominees, is testament to the quality shows and magnitude of the talent South Africa has to offer. With the viewers voting for the favourites in every category – this is anyone’s race.”

Said Sema: “The DStv MVCA is a way for us to give our viewers a platform to choose their favourite entertainers, who have become a significant part of their daily lives. Another important aspect of the awards is that they recognise both seasoned and new professionals, therefore contributing to the growth of Mzansi talent.”

Last year, fan favourite Thembisa Mdoda walked away with the gong for Mzansi’s ultimate favourite personality, a hotly contested category that had fans furiously casting a combined one million votes across categories.

This year there is the addition of a new category, Favourite Personality of the Year, which will be awarded to a personality that has gone above and beyond to have an impact in our society.

There’s also a hardworking and dedicated community leader who will be bestowed the Life Changer award, courtesy of headline sponsor 1LIFE. This is a person who has worked tirelessly and passionately for the betterment of their community to create positive change. Not only will they be honoured at the ceremony, but will also receive a cash prize of R50 000 (Fifty Thousand Rands) as a thank you!

Kia is also back as an associate sponsor, joined by Castle Milk Stout.

Fans will be able to vote in 11 categories and the nominee with the most votes out of all the categories will be named the ultimate viewers’ choice. With so much love for their entertainment favourites, let The Game of Votes begin – and may the best Fandom win!

‘Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’ Mini-series To Commemorate Mandela Centenary

Producer, Anant Singh announced today that a four x 1-hour mini-series of the film, MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM created to commemorate the Centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth will be broadcast on DStv’s Mandela 100 Tribute Pop-Up Channel between 18 and 22 July.  Singh also announced the Mandela Documentary Collection produced by himself which include BEYOND LONG WALK TO FREEDOM, COUNTDOWN TO FREEDOM, PRISONERS OF HOPE, A HERO FOR ALL and VIVA MADIBA will also be broadcast on the Tribute Pop-up Channel over the same period.

The MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM mini-series stars multiple award-winning actor, Idris Elba; award-winning actresses Naomie Harris and Terry Pheto; Tony Kgoroge; Riaad Moosa; Lindiwe Matshikiza; Atandwa Kani; Jamie Bartlett and Deon Lotz, and is produced by Singh.

The mini-series tells the Madiba story in a more detailed manner – his childhood ; adapting to life in the big city of Johannesburg; becoming politicized, then incarcerated for almost three decades and ultimately becoming President of a democratic South Africa. The MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM mini-series is an inspirational story of struggle, sacrifice, hope and triumph, and serves to broaden and deepen knowledge about Madiba and his lifelong commitment to freedom and democracy in South Africa, and complements the theme of the Mandela Centenary Commemoration, Be The Legacy.

Commenting on the creation of the mini-series, Singh said, “During the production, we shot an enormous amount of footage that was not used in the feature film due to time limitations, and decided to create the mini-series.  We are very pleased that this enables us to tell the complete Madiba story as it includes scenes of his childhood in the Transkei; being sent to live with the Tembu Regent, Jongintaba; his move to Johannesburg and experiencing the vibrance of Sophiatown and its destruction and his internship with the Johannesburg law firm, Witkin, Sidelsky and Eidelman and many other watershed moments in his life.  We are thrilled to share our vision of a four-part mini-series of Madiba’s journey with South African audiences as we celebrate his 100th birthday.”

Singh’s Mandela Documentary Collection covers the period beginning shortly before South Africa’s first democratic elections to his passing in December 2013:

  • COUNTDOWN TO FREEDOM: This film documents the first free and fair election in South Africa and includes exclusive access to Nelson Mandela as he took the final steps on his walk from prisoner to president.
  • PRISONERS OF HOPE: This documentary charts the reunion on Robben Island of 1 250 of its former political prisoners led by President Mandela.
  • A HERO FOR ALL: The film tracks the activities of President Mandela from the run-up to South Africa’s first democratic elections and throughout his presidency.
  • VIVA MADIBA: This is the story of a rich life, a record of comradeship, and a new glimpse into historical and personal facets of this great man’s rise from an anonymous child to a world icon, restoring our faith in the power of change, and celebrating the man who shaped the destiny of a nation.
  • BEYOND LONG WALK TO FREEDOM: This fascinating five-part series examines the history and issues behind Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk To Freedom through the use of original interviews with Mr. Mandela and the people who knew him well.
  • CELEBRATING MANDELA ONE HUNDRED, produced especially for the Mandela Centenary celebrations, traces Mandela’s life from his roots in the rural village of Mveso, to becoming one of the greatest statesmen the world has ever seen. The film takes us beyond the political and into the personal, and features exclusive interviews with family members, close friends, comrades, politicians and international celebrities, telling us the story of a man who became an international icon.

Singh added, “I am fortunate to have had unprecedented access to events with Madiba after his release from prison, and to record historic events for posterity through the production of these films which remind us of Madiba’s legacy and his selfless leadership.  We are delighted to have partnered with DStv to broadcast them as part of the Mandela Centenary celebrations.”

“This is a very special five-day pop-up channel to honour and celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of the global icon Nelson Mandela; a man whose life-long commitment to justice and freedom shaped the world. We pride ourselves in only acquiring the very best content and couldn’t have asked for a better line-up. Thank you to world-renowned Videovision Entertainment for their contribution,” says Yolisa Phahle, General Entertainment CEO, MultiChoice.

DStv’s Mandela 100 Tribute Pop-Up Channel can be found at Channel 199 on the DStv bouquet.

DStv Brings Unique Mandela 100 Tribute Pop-up Channel To All Its Customers Across Africa

Wednesday 18 July is an important date on the 2018 calendar.  On the timeline of world history, it marks a hundred years since the birth of one of Africa’s most beloved icons, legendary statesman and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela.

On that day, DStv will launch a special five-day long pop-up channel to celebrate and honour the extraordinary life and legacy of Tata Madiba. DStv’s Mandela 100 Tribute Channel will be available to all DStv customers across Africa.

Starting on Madiba’s birthday, Wednesday 18 July, at 19:00, (on channel 199) the channel will feature an exceptional mix of films, documentaries, archive footage from M-Net’s multiple award-winning actuality programme Carte Blanche as well as exclusive celebrity interviews.

“Around the globe, Nelson Mandela is revered as a hero of the struggle and as the man who led South Africa to democracy.  While striving for justice and freedom and shaping a nation, he also changed the world with his humility and indomitable spirit. We are immensely proud to dedicate a unique pop-up channel to celebrate the life and legacy of this beacon of selflessness and reconciliation, who gave hope to millions,” says Yolisa Phahle, General Entertainment CEO, MultiChoice.

The channel, which was compiled for DStv by M-Net, Africa’s leading storyteller, is packed with programmes that paint a powerful picture of what it meant to be Madiba – and what Madiba has meant to the world.

Each night at 20:00 – from Wednesday 18 July to Saturday 21 July –  DStv customers across the continent can tune in for a new director’s cut, in the form of a four-part miniseries, of the landmark film The Long Walk to Freedom (2013), based on Mandela’s autobiography which focuses on his early life and 27 years in prison, and stars Idris Elba.

The Mandela 100 Tribute builds up to a heart-stopping climax on the final evening: Invictus (2009), the Hollywood blockbuster directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Springbok rugby captain Francois Pienaar.

It is the true- to-life depiction of South Africa’s victory at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Madiba famously walked on to the Ellis Park turf in the No 6 jersey, usually worn by Pienaar, to thunderous applause before the match – a stroke of genius that spurred the Springboks on to glory.

Other highlights include:

The Face of Unity –  a documentary with previously unscreened footage and tributes from former US President Barack Obama; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; musical genius Ray Charles, and Hollywood luminaries Samuel L. Jackson and George Lucas.

In the Name of Mandela, War and Peace – a summary of the political history of South Africa from the time of the discovery of gold in 1886 up to the election of Nelson Mandela as President in 1994.

Mandela’s Unsung Heroes – an account of the Rivonia trial in which some of Nelson Mandela’s fellow accused in the trial, that led to his incarceration on Robben Island, share their memories.

Countdown to Freedom –  Narrated by James Earl Jones and Alfre Woodard, this independent documentary chronicles the behind-the-scenes leadup to the rebirth of a nation and Nelson Mandela’s triumph in South Africa’s first free elections.

For the full schedule, go to under The Guide as well as on the TV Guide and EPG (Electronic Programming Guide) on your decoder, or the TV Guide on DStv Now.

DStv customers can also access the Long Walk To Freedom miniseries, and Carte Blanche inserts on DStv Catch Up on their PVR and Explora decoders, as well as all the content from the channel on DStv Catch Up Plus through their connected Explora or on DStv Catch Up on DStv Now.
