This week’s discovery of more than 5 000 donkey hides in a container in Benoni has shed light on the illegal slaughter and trade in the animals for meat and skin, allegedly by a Chinese syndicate. With hides said to sell for up to R7000 each, Carte Blanche investigates the trade in local donkeys purportedly for use in Chinese medicine, and estimated to be worth millions.
