Over the past few months, Jan Bloukaas has shown that he is heading in a new direction with his music career. This has not only caused a stir in the industry but has also gained him many new fans.
As a result, there is currently great excitement in music circles, as this talented musician has just released a brand-new single and highly anticipated album!
HEILIG, the third single from his new album – VREEMDELING, which he co-wrote with Almero Welgemoed in 2018, is about how even though you often overlook the beauty within yourself, there is someone who notices it.
“Because it is my mother’s favourite, the song is very special to me,” he reveals about this beautiful acoustic track. “I think the song has a catchy melody and that people will love it because it contains spiritual elements, even though it was written to be a love song.”
For the music video, the contrast between light and dark was used to symbolize the meaning of the word “heilig (holy)”. Johan Vorster of Inhoud Huis Musiek directed the video, which was filmed in the east of Pretoria by Daniël Rademeyer.
“With this concept, we wanted to convey the message that everyone can choose what lights up their path in life,” he explains. “With this song, I wanted to create something completely different from my previous video. I am very grateful for the opportunity to use it to show that I can also create music in other genres, and I hope it is well received by the public.”
The artist is also very excited to share his new album with listeners. It was created over a period of three years and deals with themes like relationships and self-discovery.
According to Bloukaas, he chose the title, VREEMDELING, because it best summarizes the theme of the album and because he realized that circumstances could alienate you from the people around you.
He produced the album himself, with input from Peach van Pletzen and Ruan Graaff. Peach also did the final mixing.
When asked about his favourite song, he says that it is impossible to choose because each one has special meaning for him.
“On the day I was supposed to record my last five songs in the studio, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. However, I decided to finish the album before starting with treatment, and I am grateful that I was able to do so and film a music video.”
Jan Bloukaas, a.k.a. Jean du Plessis, barely finished school in 2017 when he shot to fame with the song Kaas Elke Dag and landed a deal with Universal Music.
Since then he has had a very successful career, boasting several radio- and dance hits (including kykNET en Chill, Boerseun and Desember), two popular albums (Desember and The Party Starter), a record deal with Inhoud Huis Musiek and numerous awards.
The Capetonian also collaborated with Biggy and Early B on the song Dans and released a duet, Sterre Brand, with Janie Bay. Additionally, he has also shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the industry and performed at several major music festivals and concerts.
He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is determined to remain positive. He is also still constantly working on new music.
“I hope that my new album and single will be well received and that fans will continue appreciating the new direction my music has taken,” he concludes.
